My parents hate bikes - my dad's brother smashed himself up quite badly while doing motorcycle training with the army. When my eldest sister reached 16 and wanted transport my dad reluctantly alowed her to buy a FS1E, which he then bought from her and passed on to the next sister down and then on to me and my younger sister. My elder sisters bought GT and RD250s when they reached 17, but gave up bikes when they passed their car tests, my younger sister just carried on riding the FS1E until she got a car - I carried on riding. My parents have come to accept that at 46 years old I'll never willingly give them up, but my mum still asks me when I'm going to grow up and stop riding.

There was never any doubt that my eldest daughter would get a bike, she was mad on them from the moment she realised what fun it was to sit on the fuel tank of a GS550 and be taken up and down the road. In all the years she's been riding - she passed her test in May 1998 aged 17 and 3 days - I've never had any fears or worries about her getting hurt, if I did it would probably destroy the pleasure she gets from bikes and I'm not doing that to someone I love. My younger three kids just aren't all that bothered about them, maybe that's because their step-dad has a piece of crap Large Capacity American Made V-Twin Cruiser With A Double Barreled Name, and that's enough to put anyone off riding a bike.

Ive been going pillion since the mid 70's and riding since 2002 - my best friend was beside herself when I said I was going to take my test and tried to warn me off with a story about her friends brother's wife's mother's sister's auntie's son who was riding pillion and killed when a car knocked them off...I reminded her that I had been riding pillion for 30 years and asked her how a bike can be dangerous when it is an inanimate object? Then I reminded her that falling off horses (which she does!) can be fatal occasionally too

My parents and sister have never been in the slightest bit concerned...not sure how to take that really .

But I have strongly discouraged my son from it as I wouldnt be able to sleep at night...fortunately he is more into cages - although I still worry anyway! - Motheritis

I can never understand this, I get an immense sense of pride when I see my daughter getting her knee down or coming past me with the front wheel of her Gixer 6 skimming the tarmac. My mum freaked when I overtook my dad's motor on my Gixer thou at over 100, and I can't understand why she didn't appreciate the nicely controlled 3rd gear wheelie I was pulling at the time. Old people are strange.

My mum's uncle still "goes out for a hoon" (his words) at the ripe old age of 78, and he's safe too, not a doddery old idiot! He was the only person related to me that was encouraging

Well, I havent really had to discourage him as such...just ignore him when ever he has occasionally brought up the subject of getting a bike but he has always been so into his bling-bling-mobiles with ICE system at full boom that he hasnt the money for a bike anyway...phew!
