Borg warner designed it IIRC. It's like 2 boxes so second box has your next gear ready. Very fast shifts.

DSG is pretty simple in theory, two clutches two half shafts with one output shaft. all the evens on one side and all the odds on the other.

in practice however they are as complex as hell which is why only the VAG group have really mastered it for full production models.

sure the alfa boxes are sturdy enough too but any gearbox is a complicated bit of kit and probably beyond most people of a basic mechanical competency. However if your brave enough or if you know a mechanic its quite possible to do a strip down and rebuild in a few hours. Access is going to be the main problem so getting it on a lift would make kife a lot simpler.

PM Mototech... he does a lot of work for our local Alfa Romeo dealers. He might be able to give you some advice.
