I find Antivirus apps to be the worst offenders for slowing things down...

It's a combination of a 6 year old HD and an equally old Windows install. A reformat and fresh install of Windows would likely solve it. Windows gets slower and slower over time, it's just a downside of the operating system unfortunately.
Eek, that's quite a long time with those specs... I have the same processor, but overclocked (a little bit) to 2.66GHz and with 4GB ram but i have 7 120mm case fans keeping it cool... It takes about 40 seconds from power on to load to desktop (no log-in screen).

What OS do you have? Try emptying data onto an external harddrive, or installing another HDD to leave more space on the C: drive.

Ahhh.... I hate McAfee, it came pre-loaded on my laptop as a trial, and i barely used an hour of trial use before destroying the software. DIE McAFEE!!

Anyway... I use Norton Internet Security 2009 which is very light and has protected me from the intrusive evil that lurks about the cyber world. I don't go for "full system/total protection" software that wants me to backup, defrag and dance because i can do that when i want to, I just needed solid virus protection.

Stay safe

7 case fans!?!?!? WTF man.

Im running a Q6600 @ 3GHz (going higher is a little pointless) and that only gets to 45*C under stress test with 2 120mm fans. Ah well.

Used to run my other computer with a E6600 @3.6GHz but either the CPU or Mobo cant handle the 1600FSB any more So running that one at stock, 2.4GHz. Might get a E8500 and mobo to replace that one and see about 4GHz. That will be my ultra g33k rig.

Well, i have a centurian 590 case and I wanted to fill all the fan slots with fans, it looked bare now it glows bright blue with Hiper Chrome fans. And in summer (when it gets here) it's my room cooler too.
Good luck with the 4GHz E8500 rig! Sounds mean!!

Probably simple matter of a fresh install will sort it.

Re. antivirus apps, the new AVG 8.5 seems $hite, loads slower than the one it replaced.

Fans won't cool air, they just move it around a bit. They are actually adding heat to your room.
My comp is an old athlon thing, lots of fans because it used to run 24/7. That is like a space heater for the room it's in.
I can't be rsed with overclocking or whatever, but I quite fancy building a watercooling setup.
