changed the quick fit petrol connector so the petrol leak is fixed and as suspected the clutch came out as one solid lump, levered them apart and gave them a good soak and seem to work alright now, although as I only have a SV battery spare at present it's just not man enough to prime the fuel system and start the bike unless fully charged so am charging the battery to have a go in the morning.

Cheers Mark.

Excuse my ignorance and stupidity but was it stuck because half of the clutch was dry where the engine hadn't been running?

Basically the metal bits in the friction plates rusted onto the steel plates as it was brand new and out of the oil for 3 years.

The clutch basically has two parts, one connected to the crank and the other the gearbox, these come together as an outer and inner on the clutch basket (where the plates sit), the steel plates are attached to the inner and the friction plates to the outer.

Springs hold these two sets together allowing drive to the output shaft, however by pulling the clutch lever in these plate slip against each other and allow a smooth transaction from drive to disengagemnt of power through the clutch.

Cheers Mark.

clutches...i get them, but i still dont see how the plates seperate and come back together...the animation on how-stuff-works is a bit misleading when you look at a real clutch

same with gearboxes

i'll stick to the powerhouse bit, i get that, its easy to understand
