If it's just the injected cams then it shouldn't make a difference compared to an injected model... But if it's got the injected intakes and the old intake cams in the exhaust side, which it ought to really, that does make a fair bit of difference, it's louder but also seems to sort of "thicken" the sound.

Its got injected intake cams I think - don't know really - steve jordan did the work on it in the service history it just says cam change in the reciepts with a second dyno run taking it from 66 - 70 ish Bhp.

its got a real deep rasp to it. . .lovely sound

It's not a wives tale, there are several cases of it kicking about including one on this very forum.

It is not common, but it does happen. It seems the K3 lost the curvy habit of chomping big-end shells and gained this one...

thats fair enough, nowhere near as common as is made out though. I've seen many perfectly healthy K3s, including my own that lives a far from peaceful life.

Having said that, I've seen more stories about broken engines from later models than I have about the K3 in particular. In my opinion not enough to label the model year with a design fault. There may have been an issue that was resolved fairly quickly in manufacturing, who knows.

I'ld be interested to see Suzuki technical reference to this, anybody work for a dealer or have access to known technical faults from SVs?

I was speaking to richie about this the other day and apparently the conrods are the same part number as the curvy ones which suggests they are exactly the same part

The conrods may be the same but the crank isnt. Also the crank is mounted in a slightly different engine which may have different bearings, different end float bearings and clearance, possibly different oil supply pressures and setup. All tiny variances that could potentially cause a problem.

Just comes down to the new engine design in its entirety introducing the potential for a problem.

I just think that the numbers of actual failures are so small that I dont consider it to be a design fault at all. These engines (like most modern engines) are pretty difficult to stress, they are designed to run within the normal rev range and so provided they are maintained properly you are unlikely to see a problem. The most likely way to cause damage to a well maintained SV engine IMO is to drop down the gears too fast allowing the rear wheel to bring the revs too high under engine braking, this wont be protected by the rev limiter.

That's hardly true.

The K3, I'd say is a tweaked K2. They changed the cases a little I think, in one area to resolve a known problem about pumping emptying the sump backwards and blowing it up. The gearbox if not exactly the same swaps over fine. They changed the cam timing slightly based on yoshis hot cams for the curvy. Added some enviro-b*ll*cks to the engine (EFI, PAIR valve). Oh and changed the side cases. But hardly a totally new design.
