Eurogamer has given it an average review (both in terms of the score and in terms of the review itself, which doens't go into much detail as the writer seemed more interested in his distasteful joke about a soldier dying on a battlefield being offered a copy of the game and being told 'see if you'd played this you'd have known what would happen' ) but the Code*******s forums are more interesting in that some people have posted their thoughts already.

Summarized:
-there's no AI in multiplayer player vs player - just you and your buddies. And it's only 4vs4 on consoles.
-for all the effort they've made in a huge sandbox island with all these vehicles, you're stuck with a dozen very linear singleplayer missions and whatever the multiplayer mode entails. A huge waste of content if you ask me.
-in co-op mode, you can't go more than 275m from your mate, which is RUBBISH.
-there's lots of problems with the sound cutting out.
-the in-game menu system is horrible.
-you can't pick your weapons for each mission - some guys have resorted to killing one of their squadmates in order to get his sniper rifle.
-it's not as hardcore as the original was, they've tried to make it possible for the screaming elmos to play too.

While I'm disappointed, it *is* a Codemasters game and I don't know why I expected otherwise. Certainly I'm keeping all crossable appendages crossed that ArmA2 makes its way to consoles eventually.

Like I said to Warthog, I'm very picky about my military games. IL-2: Birds of Prey is out recently and while it too is a bit limited (a campaign you'll finish in a day, scripted missions that break and don't complete, multiplayer a bit underwhelming) it makes up for it with the sheer number of planes and some of the best flying action I've seen in years. I get the feeling I'll play OFPR and just keep trying to do stuff from the original that's been taken out.

Hmm, metalangel, from what you've said i might wait a little while before I get my copy.

Bad Company 2 looks promising, there is a video on www.battlefield.com (scroll down a bit).

Yeah, the old Battlefield games were great, Frontlines (guys who made Desert Combat for BF1942) was pretty good too. Didn't like BF1943 recently.

By all means make your own mind up, read a lot of reviews and forums, but in my own view the game will be really disappointing. I mean, why make dozens of vehicles and loads of weapons for a mostly linear game where you'll never get to use them all? Or a huge (it takes four hours to drive across it in a jeep) island if you'll only do a dozen missions in isolated locations? What gave Flashpoint its longevity was the modding tools and especially the mission editor. The mission editor apparently made it to the Xbox port of the original but there isn't one for Dragon Rising, which means when you've inevitably exhausted all the options you'll just stop playing.

I'm just... disappointed.

hmmm yea, my friend was excited about the mission editor, and was suitably dissapointed at the news it wouldnt make it into the final game.

Makes me feel like it could be more "call of duty" than "battlefield". I like the battlefield games

I was just playing Arma 2 last night, and got onto the mission where you just have to take loads of villiages, just like the modded Capture the Island CTI games form OFP1. Brought back memories, driving for a full 15 minutes real time only to get shot in the head randomly. All the hurt and frustration wells back hahaha.
