Thank you for your input, the new part is on order and hopefully arrive tomorrow.

Were those tests for the reg/rec and for the alternator? From what he tells me the generator is fairly new and the magneto/alternator rotor needed replacing, so as i said thats on order.

once this is fitted i will make sure he does all the checks u pointed out (hopefully he should know himself)

ps: if only i knew about your shop, as im only in chiswick, and im sure if i left it in your hands it wouldnt still be in the garage 9 days later with a part on order that he wanted me to order myself

any more feedback is greatly appreciated

Good evening all.

The tests I detailed earlier are for the alternator stator, & the general wiring between the Regulator & the battery.

If the alternator & the wiring tests are ok, it's pretty safe to assume they Regulator has had it.

Cheers.

P.S. At least you know about me now though eh! If you're still having problems with it, or for anything else, please give me a call.

Not as widely known here, but over the water a few SV1000s have experienced loose magnets in the rotor, they run OK 'cos the rotor spinning holds the magnets hard to the rotor.

Stator failures are rare but I've had two SV1000s with duff alternators recently. Reg/recs had been replaced by 'knowledgeable people' in both cases - and of course hadn't cured the fault, because even if it's the widely quoted problem du jour what's actually required is someone able to give a proper diagnosis of what's wrong.
I'm sure it's happened, but I've not seen an SV1000 with a duffed reg/rec yet.

Someone occasionally posts an absolutely ace flow chart of charging system maladies and remedies, any idea where it is?

Hi all,

I know this is going to sound silly (but as i said im trying to learn lol) but gpoing back to the stator tests, could you explain continuity to earth and how to diagnose if the stator is ok or not.
