Lots of people make a joke about what is a grim situation. Its not that the person is insensitive (not always anyway), its just they feel that maybe a joke will help to dissolve tension i suppose.

Look at the jokes made on here when people have off's and stuff...we know its serious, but a joke helps to dissolve the badness

in anycase, it is a little tasteless, but then how many of us laughed at jokes about michael jackson, or stephen gatley. These two individuals were loved by many

Im on an RAF site, the general consensus is that he actually heard the comment from an injured serviceman at Headley court rehabilation centre, personally I cant stand the the smug **** but he actually supports out troops so it may have been taken the wrong way, incidentally any serving or ex service personnel will tell you that a kind of black humour is often a saftey valve.

Is this, perhaps, a topical 'outrage' instigated by The Sun et al? I missed it all.

If so, that makes me more sick, as it's just mob-provoking hypocrisy that sells papers.

Personally, Jimmy Carr gets right on my t!ts, but I appreciate a good joke and perhaps would have laughed. It's quite a good gag really.

If this joke / comment had been made in a Mess or NAFFI bar the place audience would of been laughing. Sick / Black sense of humour in the forces (keeps you going on times).
He,s also right an old friend of mine is in training for that very event having lost his legs, and knowing him he will do very well.

I'm the only one then who doesn't find it amusing.

I don't care if I'm in a minority of one, and I don't care what anyone else thinks.

It was insensitive and sick. Black humour or not - and black humour is usually having a 'laugh' at someone else's expense - I didn't find it remotely funny.

Anybody who gets offended by comedy to the point of writing letters of complaint should drag their limp-wristed, yellow, left wing, hippy carcasses over to the nearest solid object and batter their heads against it until their brains fall out.

I don't think I've ever met a squaddie who didn't have a far more sick sense of humour than this. When somebody who was the target of this joke finds it offensive, there is a problem*. Until then I hope the complainants balls turn square and fester on the corners.

* This group of people are actually worthy of consideration in my view, one of the very few who are. I think comedians should go out of their way to try to offend everyone else!

Good for you Ed. Humour is a very personal thing - some jokes make some people laugh, some jokes make some people irritated, some jokes some people just don't get. I used to work in equalities and we used to dish out the most near-the-knuckle material, otherwise we'd all take it far too seriously and end up like the PC brigade. Of course, we knew when it was and wasn't appropriate to let loose. Mike says the same about fire station humour.

If only Hovis was here to tell us to get over our ****ing selves and put us all straight
