As previously said communication is a good starting point. You never know, he may give you a few poinrers and save you a couple of quid. Or he might ask for your help advice. about 70 and retired !! I would imagine he's worked long and hard, for the little he has.. communication is a good starting point. |

invite him around for a cup of tea and explane what your doing to improve your residence. So you invest some money into your house then his house might increase in value also, then put on your leathers and Kevlar & Cardon fiber gloves and snack the living crap out of the next thing your going to smash with hammers....
he might get the hint.

I always found that if you tell em in advance that you'll be doing "noisey" diy today and "hoped" to have the noisy stuff done by 7ish then most peeps are ok about it. Or at least pretend to be and tollerate it in silence cos they dont wanna act the a-hole they really are by saying "no i dont want you doing noisy stuff" to your face
![]() And us cockneys are the salt of the erf i'll av ya know! he obviously just dont like you, which is understandable. Did you cut SV650.org into his hedge or something? ![]()

I can see the problem from the photo's, you were using a small hammer which meant you had to hit things multiple times, what you should have been using is a large sledge hammer, only need to hit things once, when he was banging the wall back to you a well aimed hard swing would have stopped the problem straight away. Simples.

Quiff--haven't read all the replies but instead of antagonising the old guy would it not be better to knock on his door and say you will be doing a bit of banging but will keep it as brief as possible and be finished by no later than XXXhrs
I put a post up ages ago about our neighbours doing a complete house refurb with three extensions and that is what he did with me so I accepted that the work had to be done and after he was finished he gave us a "Sorry" card and a bottle of Glenmorangie. N.B. Please don't do as Richie suggests--"Snack the living crap" probably doesn't taste nice ![]() Last edited by Dicky Ticker; 29-10-09 at 08:15 AM. |

Over a period of five years we have reworked our house - rewire, replaced doors and windows, kitchen, boiler, building work, plastering, and we are currently rebuilding the back garden.
As we have progressed I have always told them what we are upto, apologised for the noise amd stopped hitting stuff with hammers at 7 or 8pm. All of this is noisy work, but our neighbours are brilliant. While we were at work, they were making tea, coffee, sandwiches, pizza and chip butties for our builders! Sounds to me like your neighbour is a cantankerous old git, but a brief chat to smooth the waters probably wouldn't go amiss. Just tell him what you are upto, invite him round for a brew or whatever and tell him its a short term thing. Having retired people living next door to you has its advantages...they are at home when you are at work so if you get on with them they will keep an eye out on your property. Front room looks quite cool...you sure you did it yourself? |

I agree with the tell your neighbour what you're doing reply's, but if you havn't already try checking with your local council office, they will be able to give you the local guidelines regarding noise pollution, i did that when my old neighbour put a note through the door complaining about the noise i was making when i did our bedroom, i was hanging doors at 8.00 pm, just the screws in hinges bit as i had already done all the rest, silly old bag, if she had come & knocked on our door i would have said sorry & explained things but no only had the courage to sneak a note in the letterbox.
