Not quite - you only need the right amount of throttle to balance the lean & the turning circle. Less & you fall inwards, more & you do the other thing. Counter steering only initiates the turn and is only used again to alter it.
Technically not true Dave. A bike needs countersteering to make it lean over but once there, the force doesn't need to be continually applied. It is applied again at the exit of the corner, in the opposite direction, to make the bike stand up again.

You're getting tired or emotional, Carl.
'tis what I said : Counter steering only initiates the turn and is only used again to alter it.
i.e. alter it for either more OR less lean.

Problem is not so much the steering or lean but the throttle. As soon as you let go, the weight will transfer forward and unsettle the bike. I doubt it would stand upright, probably lean a little more suddenly lowside from the bike pitching forwards!

You could do it if you had a throttle elsewhere on the bike i.e on a peg! otherwise I'd say it can't be done. Even on a downhill bend, the back torque from the engine will slow you down. Maybe if you had a throttlemeister and rode around in a circle. However, that strays into very "ghey" riding territory.

OK, not wishing to brag but yes it can be done, quite easily. The trick is having the room to make sure you do it in a controlled fashion. We used to carry out various exercises to teach/develop balance and handling technique and we used the skid pan at FHQ. The knee down bit really just came about because it's something most bikers want to try at least once and with the facilities it would have been rude not to.

First we turn the idle up, and I mean really up, about 3,500 rpm. then it's just a case of riding around in third gear and setting the bike up in a circle (which isn't that easy when the revs are set that high, start quicker then gently slow until running around without touching the throttle) which you then gently tighten until you reach the desired angle of bank (peg just off the ground is nice). This is where the exercise started because the idea was to position yourself on the bike so that you required minimum steering input, and eventually with a little practice it was so little you could take both hands off the bars. Not all of us wanted to do it knee down, but some off us certainly did just for bragging rights!

Don't try this on the road thought folks. The whole idea of the exercise was to demonstrate just how much we use the throttle to balance the bike and how once you don't have that option you need to use steering instead. On the road this is just not a good idea.
