Been in Bath all weekend... So nothings been done, again!!

Might bite the bullet and just get it to a mechanic. If anyone could come over though, it would be great.

I'll get the lowers off tonight if I have time. I wont start it up, not worth doing any further damage.

Could be the CCT? - (like I know what that is!!)

Sorry but I'm not going to be able to come round any time soon. Had a baby boy born 8.32 yesterday morning...

ok, so you rode her with v. littlle oil in .... and now you have a knocking sound. if the knock is only noticable under load (ie riding the bike, not just revving it while standing), it will be very hard to tell where it is comming from... is there a frequency to the knock? does it increase with RPM, or is independent? is it 1/2 of the engine's frequency (every second "bang")?

1st step i'd suggest, is DUMP THE OIL and cut open the filter & check for metal shawings in it. if you find some/lots, it will give you an idea if/what is damaged. type of metal (aluminum/steel/brass) will tell you what it came from...

i have murdered an engine in the past... i once was a silly kid dragracing everyone willing to ...
simmilar symptoms, knocking sound, at first slight, could not locate it, kept riding till it was quite loud & noticable even at idle. botom end knock, i finally pulled out the engine and split the case. This was my introduction to motorcycle mechanics, i was 17. crank case bearing fooked, crank missing 1-2mm of metal, metal shavings everywhere in the engine.

IF you want to go this way, be sure you have a good manual, tools and space to do it with, and give yourself time to do it. as i was pretty green at the time, it took me weeks to put everything together.... on a positive side, $150 for full set of seals and gaskets, $200 for machine shop to fix the crank, ~$100 more for bearing, few bolts i menaged to damage in the process, piston rings (might as well, bike had 40K (km) on it). local shop wanted $1800 + parts for the job.
