Ignoring sidecars, I think my first pillion would have been with my dad on his Z400, which he keeps reminding me that I was leaning further than he was on both sides.

No lucky victims yet though, although the triumph was the first bike where I haven't been able to swap the seat for a cowl without having to buy stuff.

My first time was when I was about 8, my stepdad bought me a 50cc twist and go Yamaha off road type bike (not sure on the model) but it was amazing! I thought I was the coolest kid in school lol, I even remember going helmet shopping shortly after, good times!

We took the bike to the local woods which was about 5 mins down the road and I remember my first time I pulled the throttle right back and almost hit a tree, my stepdad running after me in a panic lol frightened the life out of me. We also took it on the beach once and the throttle stuck open lol, another brown trouser moment. Sadly that bike got stolen from our back garden by a group of teens and they trashed it, only had it a month or two. Gutted!

I'd been around motorcycles all my life, my dad rode as did his brother and some of my parents friends too, but the first proper ride rather then just up and down the street where I live was this:

I remember every inch of that short trip so vividly; from my house then turn right onto Mansfield Road, through the lights and past the Stag, across South End Green and up Donkeystand Hill, around the Whitestone Pond and along Spaniards Road through the old toll gate then onto Hampstead lane to Highgate, turn right at the Gatehouse and past The Flask, down Highgate West Hill and then right onto Gordon House Road, under the railway bridges at Gospel Oak, (ohhhh the noise!), onto Mansfield Road and then back into my street. I wished it wouldn't end so soon.

It's very difficult to put yourself in the shoes of a four year old, memories fade and the capacity for wide eyed wonder is something that age somehow breeds out of us. That brief memory from *cough-cough* years ago is so burnt upon my memory that I can close my eyes and, almost, take myself back there now to that wonderful moment when I was so speechlessly astonished by that fantastic experience. I think I grinned for a month, and I knew that this was something I wanted to do too - I so wanted a motorbike and I became utterly obsessed by them.

Mine was a Puch Maxi across the local village green. I got chased by a dog and a granny wielding a stick. It spurred me on to get my own bike, and to meet people like this bunch. This photo was taken summer 1982, my crutches are leaning against the fence behind. Believe it or not, I was the eldest of this lot and both girls are exes of mine.

Age 11 on the back of en500, hated it.
Age 16 on the back of zxr400 and cbr600f hated it.
My first bike a 125 hated it lol.

Only got a bike because the insurance is cheap. Id say i enjoy the acceleration alot with the bigger bike, it very enjoyable but i hate wearing a helmet, having to put 10 layers on, then there is the noise, even with plugs it ****es me off.

As for being a pillion, its an awful experience.
