Not quite...

The new generation 1.4/1.6 turbo petrol engines are close to the mpg and horsepower of a 1.9/2.0 diesel. They are not as peaky as diesels (wider power band) but it's true the torque is less. Lets also face it, when you're stuck behind a diesel the exhaust smells MUCH worse and unless you service it with anal precision it will clatter and smoke more than a petrol.

For the now very minor difference in running costs over an average mileage year I'd choose the driving pleasure of a petrol every time.

I love my petrol 2.2 210hp Honda Accord Type-R - yes it only does 30mpg local driving (which is 325 miles to £70) but the joy of throwing it along a B-road revving it to 8000rpm and listening to it howl is worth the extra cost to me. Luckily my commute is only 22 miles round trip and I am now sharing that with car and bike - I know if it was further I would have to get a diesel though... But luckily it isn't!

325 miles to £70?!
That's craazzzyyy. I've had 300 miles to half a tank before in my 1.3cdti and it's only a 50L IRRC! I have a motorbike that I can rev to ~11000rpm and get the equivilant enjoyment and better performance of a car that probably costs £30k+ more so I really could never justify the massive cost of petrol in a car anymore

Its not actually that bad though - its still 30mpg - when you see Evos and Scoobies, Skylines etc - they all do 18-22mpg roughly - then you are getting into the insane...

Plus I have a grin on my face all the time I am driving the Honda - in your Corsa you are just waiting for the journey to end - I quite often wish my journeys were longer

Oh and I have an SV1000 don't forget

Hah, my MX5 does 30mpg on the commute. That is 90% empty North Yorkshire backroads though . A more modern car would be much more fuel efficient, but less fun and then there's tax, insurance, depreciation, servicing etc. The MX costs peanuts to nothing on all those.

Will start commuting on the SV again soon, roads are currently a mixture of potholes an mud, which causes some "Dab of Oppo" moments on the way to work and suggests to me that 4 wheels better than 2 right now.

Thrashing petrol cars for enjoyment for the win

It happily hits the 7250 rpm limiter daily, not bad for a 120k car

Mazda produced a bomb proof engine, as long as you keep it in good oil and let it warm up.

I have one section of my commute where I can hit the 7,800 limiter - its done 106,000 now and loves it

Its a great car - plenty of room in the back for the little 'un, big boot - yet the ability to put a massive smile on your face and still manage fairly reasonable MPG - love it

All these reviewers have it spot on... http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews51718.html

I've got a dual fuel combo van which does 26 mpg on petrol. I'm struggling to see 270 miles per tank. Not allowed to run on gas either so work are forking out £150-£250 a week in fuel gotts love my clubcard.
