I had a mate made his own from a squeezy bottle and a pipe, and he just gave it a squeeze every now and then, he reckoned it did the trick just as well as anything complcated.

Maybe you were unlucky.

I'm sure I read about someone on here making a chain oiler from a cigar tube and some model aircraft fuel pipe tubing and a fuel tap from a similar source.

Can't be hard to do
