Last time this happened all the hauliers who took part were continually getting stopped/harassed by VOSA and the Police afterwards. For it to have any affect private motorists would have to start taking part
I am fully aware that the revenue generated is required for the mismanagement that happened with the previous Labour Government but I would not expect the current government to make drastic cuts in duty but even coming into line with the costs in Europe[EEC] would be helpful.
This would probably increase total sales as it would be more affordable and keep transport costs of goods down again giving Joe Public better spending power.
I am not an economist but pricing a commodity out of the market just does not make sense to me

And give us better terms with which to compete with Europe.

AFAIK, as I it comes up in coversation on the phone quite often to France, fuel prices aren't significantly lower over there anymore. Fair, they are cheaper, but not as much as one would expect, as in days of old.

That was the govt. after the last one?
Could be creative, dump 600 tons of concrete in front of the gates. The snow shut Grangemouth refinery for a month

When I hear about all these brutal tax rises, cuts to public services, the NHS being squeezed to within an inch of its life, cost of living accelerating, average income plummeting etc... I can't help but ask the question;

Why on earth do we have to cut so deeply, pay it all back so quickly, tax so extensively and what's the problem with dampening the severity of the deficit over a longer time with less aggression to give us a more stable recovery?!

Fair enough, it's easy to give the argument "yeah Hywel, but these are tough times, we're in debt and the money has to come from somewhere so why not fuel duty". Sure, maybe I’m missing something but basically, what's the rush?

Feels like our government are using the recession as an excuse to bend us over a proverbial and have their filthy way with us.

Cos theres no better time than at the beginning of a term in office - you can blame it all on the last lot and then be seen to be doing something about it, all the while saying "not our faulf"

Its harder to do this kind of stuff if you just start a year before the election (you are going to lose) or just after on if you have been in power, because you will not have been mentioning the cuts in your Manifesto, so will lose credibility straight off.

Because were not paying it all back in one go.

Imagine it was a credit card......were that far up the creek that up until now we've only been making the minimum payment, and still been putting stuff on the card.

Well now we're making a bit more of an effort and have stopped putting stuff on the card.

Why now - because we can all put our credit card bills off, but who knows whats going to happen tomorrow (or in 5 years time when the current government get chucked out and the next one convinces itself it can eliminate the 'bust' part of 'boom and bust')

True, but blaming Labour for the global recession is like blaming Slayer for the Japan tsunami as far as I'm concerned.

I'd be happy to vote for a government who just admitted that there's a problem, told us they were gonna put a simple plan in place that would gradually bring a steady recovery over the next decade or so and make sure banks don't gamble everyone’s hard earned money again. It would beat Tory-boy's approach of being completely savage and plunging the country into a grinding struggle.
