well my bike dosn't have a cat so i must just be one of those people then ....... (even though it left the factory like that)

and people were saying it wouldn't hinder performance well im sorry but it will

also if ure so anti pollution how about you stop posting cr&p and turn ure phone/pc/laptop off and save some electricity and walk instead of getting a bike....

do as i say not as i do

if you got nothing use full to add then dont post simple

I thought reminding people that the cat is there for a purpose was useful. Manufacturers dont just bolt expensive rare metal parts for no reason, and it really seems totally futile to cut a functioning one out of such a "middle market" bike. Sv's probably do more commuting than many others, there are plenty of higher mileage ones for sale, compared to more exotic race orientated stuff.

But in fairness, using your crash to highlight the madness of chasing tiny tiny gains in performance was inappropriate, and oddly was only really aimed as a general "why are we so concerned over performance from our SV's when we cant even ride them well, and thats not what they do best" rather than at you so for that I apologise my friend.

Its there so you can play your small part in riding a cleaner emitting engine, for all our sakes.

Removing it, just so we can breathe a little more of your ****e emissions is not in my view a reasonable way to behave. Ok, it might only be a little difference, but if everyone thought sod you, this planet will become uninhabitable sooner than ever.

is the performance gain really *so* valuable that kids need to develop asthma, just so you can ride your smallish capacity, mass market medium powered vehicle just a fraction more noisily?

Or are motorcyclists more selfish than the average person? More of a "sod you, I'll do as I like" attitiude? I am beginning to think so - dealing with accidents, and how all the advertising is geared to make bikers feel like "exceptional victims". How "self justifying" the ads are, and the attitude of those who use them.

So riding bikes noisier and dirtier than they need to be, just to give you the horn? Making an infetestimal difference to its performance. No wonder more women dont bike. Even poor Barwel saying how it "will" hinder performance. From the man who has to use his dads hatchback as a braking aid... So much concern about performance from a bike who's ultimate goal isn't ultimate performance. At least if you bash the cat out of a gsxr1000, I might understand the mindset, even if I still don't approve of you providing more crap out your pipe than you need to....

Bah, I'm getting grumpy in my old age...
haveing a cat on a exhaust is a catch 22 situation,a cat uses more fuel its a restriction in the exhaust and has to be run at high temperature,so you get fewer mpg.not so many years ago the car industery wanted to go for lean burn engines which would mean more mpg but this never happened as they had to go with catalytic converter, cleaner emissions but use more fuel, and since fuel used by aviation in the uk = about 11.5 million tonnes a year (if i read the statistics right) and not a cat in sight and almost no tax compared to pump fuel! well ill let you work that one out your self

yes i'm a selfish **** who will go about my business with regards to no other human being and you know what i'm happy.

catalytic converters don't take care of particulates they only convert noxious gasses into something more suitable which the supposed goody goody green guys say is bad. what is bad is the crap they use as a lead substitute 'benzene' is a highly carcinogenic substance and i'm afraid that even catalytic converters wont convert the nasty's into goodies. there are other valve lubricating substances that could be used but since benzene is part of the crude oil business they use that.

I bus, train and tube to work every day. In the last few years the price of public transport has rocketed and the frequency and reliability of the services has plummeted. They don't even run buses into town on weekends now. So this encourages me to use my 2.8 litre car. After all, with the amount I pay in tax and insurance the more I use it the better value for money it becomes.

You said that as if it was something to be proud of, that made you a rebel, or a man, or somehting.

So if I play my records through your party wall til 2:00am, am I right to be happy? Or generally living without consideration or giving a damn for the other occupants of this planet? Or the day your kid starts wheezing and requires an inhaler for the rest of his life? Is having a trivial bit of metal, causing trivial impact, really so important to you that you need to define yourself by it?

Selfish isn't some kind of self righteous stand against society, its your responsibilty in living within. I mean, its hardly what the Clash sang about is it?

I really dont get that in a forum in 2011, there are people for whom an infetesimal gain in performance is more important than the air we breathe, that you cut the cat out of a bike fitted. Its truely puzzling.

And YC - you can fo course go through life choosing to not believe something apparent, clearly logical and for which theres 90% agreement, rather like global warming, but is there really any harm in running a cleaner engine. Especially when theres been doubts for decades over emissions. I was living in Reading in 91 when they banned HGV's from certain roads out the city due to emissions. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/295067.stm dates from 99. or http://www.independent.co.uk/life-st...ma-661069.html from 2002.

And Barwell, speed and accelleration are only 2 measures of performance. The quality of your exhaust gases area further way of "quantifying" performance, its just you choose not to, because hooning around at the fastest possible speed out of the equiptment available seems more important to you at your fairly young age. I imagine I might have agreed with you 20 years ago.

It seems a shame that so far in 3 pages, no one gives a damn about their role in adding to the pollutants of the world. Seems selfish to me, and thats not a tag of praise. I think if you ride a motorbike, you take responsibility for doing so, including speed limits, personal safety, and impact on others, ie loud exhausts late at night/built up areas.

Whats the view like up there on that very high horse juju

while I do agree in many ways we should do green things like recycle rubbish, turn off the tap etc, and Im very keen to do these things, I dont think your going to change many riders on this or any other forum into tree huggers, although I for one dont have a problem with hearing both sides to an argument

HGV with a 16 liter engine, fair enough they have particulate filters these days to catch most of the nasties. Or those hippy-w*nking buses, that by the way belch smoke as they do between 6 and 9 mpg. I don't think the levels of NOx/particulate produced by a bike engine are even significant, let alone the tiny difference we're talking about with a half-*rsed catalyst in the link pipe.

I'm all for environmentalism, but they compromise the wrong way. Take a h*nda that runs rich to get by the drive-by noise testing. They've gone too far with this BS that they're designing things to match the tests not to be as good as they can. It's been found that an aftermarket system saved weight and improved economy.

As for late night riding, you don't have to go like a c***, even a noisy pipe only makes a bit of a burble if you go steady.

So, when you get down from that lonely soapbox up there I take it you will be looking at a smart car with daisies on it or a CG125 or something? Rather than a horrible, nasty, <45mpg, tyre destroying big motorbike?
