That's exactly my strategy too. I ride carefully and if someone takes me down, or the bike gets stolen, I'm covered. Not having fully comp makes me think twice before trying my super powers so I would argue that it may be somehow safer. My bet is that I will have fewer, less expensive crashes than the money I would have to pay to insurance companies. I would rather spend the cash on some advanced riding courses, better clothes or tyres than spending them on a virtual concept like "peace of mind".

I'm pretty sure, when you hit the tarmac, you would be most thankful for being in one piece than feeling sorry that you did not buy proper insurance. Hopefully you won't have to go through that at all.

If my work would really depend on a bike, I could always hire or buy a cheap old model to get em going until the bike gets fixed and it would still work out cheaper.

It's a state of mind. If insurance companies would put it differently like, "if you ride carefully and don't have any accidents from your own fault, you will loose the £1000 premium on your insurance" I'm pretty sure a lot of people would reconsider.

When I insured my SV at the start of the year, the excess for fully comp was quoted at £800. I decided to go TPFT as a result.

Pranged it a few months ago, and guess how much it has cost me to repair?

Edit: That was to replace nearly the entire front end

Nice theory, pity that accidents are very rarely THAT black and white.

Take the one with the cyclist, they swerve in front of me, I hit them, I am deflected onto the side of a van.

Cyclist leaves the scene abandoning the bike.

Van driver claims against me, I have no-one to claim against, claim goes against me.

Fortunately there was no real damage to the bike so that didnt cost me anything or need me to claim against my insurance, but if I HAD needed to I could have.

That one fals VERY much into the grey area.

Another example - a hit and run on you, you will wait FOREVER for the MIB to even decide to pay out a token amount to you

agree with going third party at those prices, no brainer really, but that is a massive differance from 148 to what was it 1000, you sure that's right?

Soulkiss definitely makes a good point there.

I think at the end of the day you just need to balance cost against risk, pretty much like the insurers do in the first place when they give you a quote.

It's an interesting theory that maybe you ride more carefully on TPO insurance....?

In 25 years of riding I've only ever had fully comp on one bike, and that was a year old Fireblade back in 1999. Strangely enough I smashed it up at the Nurburgring the following year, the only time I've ever been off my road bike and the only claim I've ever made....but then I'm probably just lucky. Must try and find that Euro lottery ticket I bought the other day.....
