If you were doing 90 and the man in front is doing 50.....theres a problem.

So I suppose neither is as bad as each other. However with the laws of speed, for example head on crashes(different as motorways you drive all the same way) someone doing 50, crashes into someone else at 50....you are doing a 100mph collision, so if both are doing 90, theres a 180 mph colllision. DEAD Chance is a funny thing

on another thought 50 isn't illegal....90 is?
No, the answer's 50mph...

....in the middle lane....stinking of worthers originals and frowning at anything going past at 70mph. Oblivious of all the cars in the rear view mirror swerving to the left or right. Thoroughly confused by the cars passing on the inside with their hazard lights or left hand indicators on.

Totally agree with this.

totally agree with this, on the way to the Peaks rideout I was almost taken out by someone doing <70mph in the 3rd lane of a 4 lane stretch of motorway, I was in the second lane which was splitting off to a junction/slip road.

The guy had no idea I was there and swerved across only missing me by inches because I had seen it coming and the van driver to my left had also been aware of what was going on so he had moved back to give me space.

Motorways are scary places, especially on a bike at times. I think this needs to go deeper than just "upping the speed limit" there needs to be more training and speed awareness and even just general awareness and checks.

The raising of the limit also goes hand in hand (from the telegraph anyway) about the 20mph being imposed in more areas than it currently is. I think this will actually bring in more money than anything else.

Can't argue with that at all I flippin hate middle laners. They're just asking for bloody undertakers and raging ravers

as for fenjer thinking motorways are scary places......I actually find riding on them comfortable and easy.....driving however is another story!

It's not just those that smell of wee though. Every possible type of person drives in the middle lane without a care or a thought in the world for anyone else.

I work on the motorway (yes, I'm multi talented!) and I've stopped many, many such people and explained their poor driving. The blank look and total lack of comprehension is so common.

The Germans have a law whereby if someone overtakes on an autobahn and doesn't move back into a clear lane within a certain distance, they commit an offence.

Would this work in the UK? I doubt it, Mr middle manager in his c0ck-mobile won't be best pleased will he?

The Standard of driving out there is pretty dam poor,
so maybe its a way boosting the jobs market ,
Get a low paid job,Bye a cheep car as its all you can afford ,Crash it at 80 mph.
No NHS to put you back together,
So somone else takes taht low paid job,
gets a cheep car...

This would be an excellent law. I might be wrong but they might use it in France too. When overtaking over there, you have to leave your indicator on when overtaking, right up until you pull back into the appropriate lane.......over here, that would be seen as some dozy fecker has forgotten to turn it off

Can be scary places, at times. I believe my punctuation may have left a little to be desired in my previous comment.

I didnt say I was uncomfortable riding or indeed driving on them.

I'm not sure. One of my least favourite things about motorway driving is when the traffic ahead is stopped dead. Yes, usually people are quite good now about putting on their hazards to warn those behind but it's still a tense thing both spotting it and then watching behind to make sure those behind you spot it too. The increased stopping distance from the higher limit would make this even more harrowing.

Yeah I thought someone might pick up on that, that's just one of my many stereotypes; there's also mr middle management on his mobile, just as bad mr. MD on his handsfree kit swapping cufflinks, miss just passed, mr spotty ooh look at the shiney tomtom, senór middleaged and lost in life, mr preoccupied making a list of nobheads he sees in the middle la...
I bet a lot of that lot give you a bit of jip or just sit there in denial pete, like you should go catch some speeders or something. The situations they cause though can be dangerous and even more dangerous the fact that they're so ignorant of everything going on around them that they're sat in the middle lane for their whole journey!
I'd love to see a law like the german's come in.

I do a moderate amount of motorway driving with work, and it went from scary , to okay, to back to scary. Things can go from calm to smashy in a heart beat. And the realisation of how bad general driving standards are...

Erm, Wrong. Myth Busted.

Head on crash, two cars doing 50 towards eachother, same energy dissapation as one car hitting a tree at 50.
