Harsh? It certainly wasn't meant that way, simply practical advice based upon the question asked.
Modern tyres, all of them - yes really, all of them, even the ones commonly accused out of slavish following of 'performance fashion' of being rubbish - are perfectly good, and they are particularly so if you are inexperienced.
No disrespect intended but you're not going to trouble your tyres, any tyres, until you get some miles on the clock.

PS. Yes, I've been riding a while, the thick end of forty years. I'm well aware of what rubbish tyres are.

If it helps i had D207's on my Fireblade when i bought it, and they gripped fine hot or cold. My standard fitment D220's on my new Sv are vague feeling in general, the front let go(low-sided) when it shouldn't have in a corner(dry conditions, 8 miles riding(warming up) and about 8 degrees outdoor temperature, 1300 miles on them) so they've been swapped to Bt-023's at great expense. I've always had Bridgestones by choice anyway.
I'd say tho that yours should be fine, when warmed up most modern tires grip quite well(like sid said), its just when they are cold or conditions aren't great that you need to be careful as this is where modern tyres vary in grip levels.
Also half the problem/answer is just having confidence in your tyres. You ride much better when you do, than when your pannicking about them losing grip.

In all seriousness, from one rookie to another - I've taken my tyres to the complete edge on rare occasions (I think probably twice in my life, on the track). I think even for spirited road riding and in all honesty on the track too, most tyres these days can cope with far more than the talent and ability of most riders. I've been told (never really sought to test out myself mind you) that most unstable rides are very partially to do with tyres and more to do with suspension set up etc...

Granted some tyres give a "confidence inspiring" ride (my pr3s for that matter definitely do!) but I know that most tyres these days will give me the same performance for my ability - I'm no Rossi to complain about turn in speeds and whatnot!

I think maybe trying the bike out with the stock tyres and seeing what they're like, getting some riding done etc... then maybe see how you feel about splashing out on some new rubber, that wouldn't be a terrible idea..?

i don't really understand you Siddy i totally agree that 95% of riders, including myself, probably aren't using what 80% of the tyres ability?

Butttt (and you knew it was coming ) sureeely for that 0.1% of times when you really need to grab a hand-full (especially as a noob as everyone is/was) its worth the extra £50 to buy what are recognised as better tyres for the bike and what will most likely give a rider confidence?

Personally, knowing that the only thing stopping my face contacting tarmac is what <10cm square of rubber...i'd like to think its the best rubber i can afford! Less Rossi more ambulance avoidance for me!

cheers robbie , thats my thoughts , if i get 6k miles out a set of tyres its 3 pence a mile , not much for piece of mind is it . i only asked about the dunlops on the sv as different tyres perform differently on different bikes .

Tyres are always a hotly debated topic! A lot of it seems to be preference but there seems to be an undercurrent of good and bad for the bike as you said

Good luck with the choice!
