That battery says its for a pointy 03 onwards, you need one for a curvy 99-02

Default Curvy electrical failure, possibly rectifier.

For the majority of cases, as the great majority of modern bikes have permanent magnet three phase alternators, a regulator rectifier is a regulator rectifier. They are mostly connected in exactly the same way, the only change is that the actual connectors are different, and thus will not physically match.
This conversation has been had on a number of occasions, reading a forum where people are not given to posting that their bike is fine might lead one to believe that the standard regulator is hopelessly unreliable, it isn't - the overwhelming majority of owners have never had a problem - that said I wouldn't replace with a standard unit as more modern items simply perform better, not because of reliability concerns.
Fit a MOSFET unit, the actual connectors are the only difference - you'll be pleased with the results.

I looked qt the battery model number and it's the same, that one says it's for a pointy but i'm pretty sure the model number is the same.
Sid: thanks, I'll keep an eye open for one, I may end up having to go fo the cheapest option though for now...

Plenty of suitable units to be found in the usual place - similar prices to a standard unit.

I'll probably go with the one that was linked earlier, new for £40

Good news! I've replaced the R/R with a brand new one and got a new maintenance free battery and (touch wood) it's working fine, I went out for a blast around the Yorkshire countryside today without any trouble

Excellent news mate.

I on the other hand have a completely dead battery with a possible alternator problem

Oh dear, the battery won't be difficult or expensive (mine was £30 with free postage off ebay)
But the alternator on the other hand will probably be quite pricey... Good luck with sorting it all out
