Well i haven't heard anything from the bloke yet. He said he was going to get a quote and ring me. It was an old M reg Rover and he seemed pretty efficient about taking down the bike registration number and my name and number. Not sure what to do, whether to leave it and wait for him hoping that he may not have had insurance etc and hence is not bothering for £50 worth of light. On the other hand i could chase it up just in case he suddenly then calls up claiming all sorts of damage.

Busters ain't got any levers for ten days or so, i may pop into hein gericke on the way home, failing that its a £34 jobbie from a dealer.

All a right royal pain in the ar5e.

If it's a rear light cluster for a Rover 214 "M" reg, then DON'T go to a main dealer - they will take the **** and charge stupid money....

If it is only a rear light cluster, then go and search scrappies or vehicle breakers yard for a suitable lens. Rover 214 - pay no more than £15 for a light cluster second hand

Get onto the guy straight away and settle up privately ASAP - he could report it to his insurers (if he's insured...), or even phone the police, and claim a hit and run..... you don't want the hassle of proving to the police that you left the scene of an accident deliberately.....

a mate of mine left his lorry in a lorry park one day, and an elderly gentleman drove past his artic (whilst my pal was in the truckstop having a full breakfast at the time....)stopped suddenly, took down the haulage firm's name and lorry reg no, and drove off.

My pal later got a nasty NIP (3 weeks later) for failing to report an accident, driving without due care and attention and leaving the scene of an accident
He wrote a cracker of a 6 page letter back to the police explaining where he was at the time, how he couldn't have caused the "accident", etc etc. He was not a happy trucker for a good 2 months. He was phoned up by the police 3 months later saying sorry - "there's not enough proof to carry on with this accident investigation, so you're let off....." He was having his breakfast with me at the time this old asian b*****d claimed my mate drove into his car.

The moral is don't let it drag on - get it sorted ASAP before the **** hits the fan insurance wise.

Legally speaking, to the best of my knowledge, any question they ask you that you don't literally answer truthfully can be grounds to void the insurance.
In legal terms all insurance contracts are subject to 'uberrimae fidae' (legal Latin for 'the utmost good faith'). You are obliged to report anything to the insurance company that may be relevant regardless of wether you are asked or not.Failure to do so could invalidate the policy.

This is happening more and more, normally with people of dubious ethnic origins. They report the accident over the phone to your boss or they contact the police.

There are regular tales on the ferry that car drivers are deliberately running into foreign trucks and then claiming compensation or a cash payment from the driver

Im not sure what part of the post so hit a nerve.

The people I am talking of are illegal immigrants who come into this country in the back of trucks. They are driving around without insurance and then claiming cash compensation for false claims from hard working foreign drivers.

It use to happen in the Eastern Bloc, now im afraid the practice has come over here.

I dare say he was reacting to the pointless reference to the old *******'s race.
When I read the two posts I had the same reaction.
Surely we're not getting racist chat on here are we?

Not racist comments at all, not from me anyway. I was talking about the tricks used to extort money from people by pretending that an accident had happened.

In Romania and Albania it was a common trick where someone claimed he had been injured and would report this to the police who would then either fine the driver or make sure you compensated the victim and his or her family.

It also happened to me a couple of times in Africa when I lived there

Unfortunately this practise is well known over here now and is called a Staged Accident
