this is all cobblers. An IL4 will always be at least as good as a v-twin in any aspect the engineer chooses to design it for. An IL4 can be made to be as grunty as a v-twin - however it will take up more space, have more moving parts and generally be more expensive. Therefore twins are used when an IL4 configuration has no advantage. For example a GSX1400 is a very grunty IL4.

The areas in which IL4s have a big advantage is being able to rev higher and produce more peak power, so they tend to be designed to take this into account and are used in applications that require this eg sportsbikes.

A twin is a good torquey motor but not so good at revving
A IL4 is also a good torquey motor but also brilliant at revving.

But an IL4 will never sound as good

How come? I don't recall anybody saying an IL4 can't be torquey and as was suggested at the beginning, it's the state of tune that seems to be the main difference.

I think Ophic just took some of the normal crap we say about IL4s as saying there were incapable. I think it's a very valid point he was making in general, though.

and other things people have implied, can't be bothered to quote it all, sorry.

people talk about IL4s like a supersport IL4 is the only type you can get. Just thought i'd point out that an IL4 is a more complex but generally superior engine design.

..................and missing the actual point of this thread, although a valid comment.
Also, just curious as to why you chose a v-twin. Beyond the sound it makes.

I went for the overall bike rather than any specific engine type. I liked the looks, handling, price etc, not to mention that i like the engine character, which is something no spec sheet will show.

Apologies if you think I missed the point, I think you're all missing mine.

I'll butt out now and go stick my head in a bucket

Good choice.
Not at all, we are all entitled to an opinion.
You are quite right that its time to draw this one to a close!
