If it wasn't for the fact that the forum'd fall apart, I'd kill you...

Excuse me for being dumb but what is an 'Advanced Ignition Key' and what does the process do?

Could be a while. Any Suzuki dealers can supply it for you but it's around £25 IIRC.

Also known as a woodruff key, it's a wee stepped bit of metal that changes the position of your Big Spinny Electrical Thing with relation to the camshaft, which does something technical and exciting to do with the engine timing and means the torque and power comes on earlier for a wider usable power band. Also may give you a little more at the top end although reports vary. It's kinda cool, pretty cheap, and just the right side of challenging to do.

Ask Jonboy if this is true.

The ignition advancer - unsurprisingly - advances the ignition, that is to say it makes the spark occur ever so slightly earlier in the process, (4 degrees, in this case). Why? When the spark ignites the mixture, it takes a certain amount of time for the flame to pass through the gas and the cylinder pressure to rise to it's maximum, the most advantageous point for the pressure to be at it's maximum is just as the piston passes over top dead centre, so to arrange this the spark is timed to happen before the piston reaches the top of it's travel. The ignition timing of the SV, (actually just about all Jap bikes), is actually set quite conservatively, this is to ensure that it will run acceptably using just about any old fuel you are ever likely to encounter, however here in Blighty fuel quality is generally fairly consistent, and better than the minimum grade that the SV was constructed to run on, in this happy circumstance you can usefully advance the ignition, (4 degrees is a very common figure), to take advantage of that.
As such it shouldn't really be considered tuning, more setting up taking account of local conditions.

No need to patronizing.

For me, most definitely! For those more capable bods I'm sure it'll all make sense .

Wasn't being patronising, I started writing an explanation and realised I didn't have the neccesary jargon to do it right so I thought I might as well try and make it funny. FWIW my rubbish explanation tells you more or less exactly what I knew about ti when i decided to do it, and is really all you need to know- though Sid Squid's explanation is, of course, better in every way
