I don't think I pay too much extra because of my occupation (IT). But...

As my dad's a Mechanic it cost me a fortune to add him to the insurance as he knows how to make them go faster

I think it's anything to make it cost more

But thats the thing. They dont. The actuaries sit and work out the risks for insurance companies and they go by what people tell them when data is collated.

So computer managers who say computer manager may crash less than those doing the same job but say IT manager.

Also think about it, executives will tend to have company cars. More mileage, more at risk than someone who isnt likely to have one. So in bikageboys case, a restaurant manager is statistically less likely to travel for work than a graphic designer...

Am I the only one that can see the logic behind this?? Im not saying its not crap but I can kind of see how they get to this.

In my case consider civil servants dont tend to drive to work in Whitehall - no parking, so again less miles, therefore less time on road, therefore less risk [allegedly ]

But they ask for mileage and if you will be using the vehicle to commute. So what the hell does it matter if I do less than 6k miles and commute to work as a Chartered Accountant or as a Financial Consultant?

I always say "Local Govt Officer".

If I say "EHO" or "Pollution Control Officer" the premiums sjy-rocket to the point wheresome companies refuse to insure me for business use.

Go figure

The reason I think a lot of people are sceptical regarding the amount of accurate 'science' that goes into producing a quote is the huge disparity between the quotes you are given between companies. If their risk analysis was accurate enough to be so precise down to ever-so-subtle differences in job title, why did one company (whose criteria is matched on their advert: It was one of those, are you x,y and z? If so ring us for a better quote!) quote me more than 3 times the company I ended up with? Also, for the record, it wasn't an artificially high 'we don't want to insure you' quote.

I can imagine there would certainly be some link between professions and how much of a risk you are, but really, I could legitmately give 3 different job titles and the difference between them is solely semantic.
