I guess I can trump everyone with this as I was in the USA!
I had landed at Pittsburgh international the night before (10/9/2001) and travelled to Altoona PA to stay with relatives. The next morning (11/9) my Aunt said to me, why dont you travel to the next town where there is a large shopping mall. So we hopped in the rental car with no map and just some scribbled instructions (it was only just down the "highway") Reached the mall and people are running around everywhere and all the shops were shutting and we were wondering what the hell was going on! Managed to stop some guy in an open Jeep who was about to drive off and said to him "What on earth is going on?" - to which he replied "Terrorists, get the hell out of here!" and sped off! - So naturally we assumed that terrorists were at the mall! So we jumped in the car and thought we should head back. Tried to join the highway and couldnt as it was all blocked (we later found out this was because they were going to land planes on it!) so we had to turn round and just follow the traffic (dont forget we had no map!) we carried on into the next town and stopped at a sawmills and a very helpful chap told us what was going on and gave us instructions to get back. Spent the rest of the day watching it on TV - it turned out that the plane that crashed "in the countryside" was only about 15 minutes drive from where we were! ![]() Getting out of the country on the 22nd was interesting - my Uncle wasnt even allowed into the airport as he had no ticket! My girlfriend even had to give up her makeup scissors from her hand luggage! ![]() Something that will stay with me forever! |

Kings Cross Train Station ordering a pint while wait for my Dad to turn up. Nobody in the pub had twigged at first, I thought it was a trailer for some action movie!!!! The place went silent as soon as everyone realised what was happening. Very bizarre!!!!

I was at home. I was just sitting down to eat my dinner of Cheese and Bacon toasties. When it came on the news, I was sat staring in disbelief at what had happened when the showed the 2nd plane hit.
I really couldnt believe what had happened.

I was at my desk in the Middle School Library where I worked. Just so happened to have the news on the internet helping a kid do some research.
He thought it was a movie trailer and I remember telling him "It can't be, this is a news site which means... um go and sit down I'll be over in a minute." Needless to say that 'minute' ended up being most of the day! |

A was at work and rumours just began to filter through the office. ABC, CNN, BBC - all were jammed, so people just seemed to drift to the canteen, where so many of us were already there watching the news.
I remember the financial director asking how many of us had seen the Twin Towers in real life. Not many of us had. None of us would again - was his reply. |

I was picking up some bits for the VFR in a local bike shop - heard it on the radio.
Went home & spent the rest of the day watching CNN
