The drawback being they're illegal in this country.
So is speeding, smoking dope etc.
So is causing death by dangerous driving, crack cocaine, etc.

Oh, well, if you're not caught it must be ok!

So you only use them if no-one else is around? A radius of 10 miles gives you quite a large area.

The legal maximum is 0.5W I think, so you're 10 times over that. Anyway, I'm just playing devil's advocate - half a watt does seem pretty low for 2-way radio.

OK, as you are playing devils advocate, we won 't get in to a flame war. The problem is bikers tend to get split up, especially when groups are of mixed ability, very quickly the faster one can get out of PMR range with the slower ones and should god forbid something go tits up. it is only when you have got fed up at the next meet point and send someone back that you get the message.

Once you get off the A roads you will find mobile phones etc don't work, even a couple of small hills can be enough to disrupt weak signals. etc. the legal pmr 0.5w maybe enough for parents to keep in contact with kids at fun fairs etc but are useless for real communication with mobile users

You're right, and one of the worst things that can happen in that situation is that the ones at the back try to play catch-up at speeds they're not comfortable with, and end up having an accident because of that. I suppose if they're in contact that's less likely to happen (but hopefully they're happy enough just to decide to continue at their own pace and catch up at the next stop).

Anyone know of a mod for the Cobra MT725 to increase the power? Just out of interest of course
