Yeah and now I'll never be able to watch the film the same way again. I will have horrible flashbacks to that *******'s video

Never seen it. Thank God. My enjoyment of Top Gun and Days of Thunder is not ruined.

[geek]
Number one rule in air combat is to avoid a dogfight unless you have no other choice (OK.. makes for a crap film!)
The F-14 is the only aircraft cleared to carry the AIM-54 Phoenix missile.. with a range in excess of 100+ miles... and the F-14 can shoot 6 of these in one go.. why the heck would you want to get to within Sidewinder range (5< miles) ?!?

If you are flying so close together that you can 'hit the brakes and he'll fly right by' and your cockpit isnt full of lead, or generaly you aint having a silk elevator ride to earth (parachute).. then the pilot who is up your **** is either a) blind or b) a very crap shot, and doesnt deserve to be in a fighter aircraft

Also, very big nit pick here.. Russian aircraft even back when Top Gun was made had one massive advantage over nearly all other aircraft if they ever got into a dogfight... most aircraft in those days had to get the bandit right infront of their aircraft to get a lock with an IR missile.... Russian Aircraft had HMS (helmet mounted sights) which means all he had to do was look at your aircraft with his head to get his IR missiles to lock on to you... thus the rule at the very top... avoid a dogfight.

not related to the film, but some useless info:
p.s. the F-14 is no longer in Service with the US Navy.. as someone thought it would be a good idea to now retire them all.... last country to still have F-14's in Service is currently.... Iran

[/geek]

p.s. I still like the film....
