I think you're better off away from the bike if possible, the bars are ideally placed for snapping your thighs if you fly into them, I'd rather take the more gentle curves of a car or similar, they're designed to be hit by pedestrians after all.

It depends, a good percentage of crashes that I have witnessed have been caused by the rider giving up and letting go before the point of no return.

Remember this: Until it's sliding along the ground with sparks coming off of it, you haven't crashed. And even then, situation conducive, it might still be worth trying to make the best of it.

Of course, this greatly depends on the circumstances of the potential accident, the big problem is deciding whether to do anything conscious, I often think if you had time to think about it, you probably had time to at least lessen the severity of the crash/collision if not avoid it at all.

Whilst it is sliding down the tarmac, pull the clutch in and try and keep the throttle on (so the engine doesn't stall) ... as soon as the bike stops pick it up, if the footpeg isn't bust, ride off ....

I really do believe in that but you have to work at overcoming your natural instinctive panic reaction.

...and No, I'm not saying my name is Rossi

True, go racing for a while and then, when* you've got plenty of crashing experience, you can work on this particular skill.

*Note I say when, not if, 'cos ya will - unless you just fanny around at the back anyway.

I have had roughly 10 (?) offs, and all of the low sidery type ones I just came away from the bike as it slid away from me.
I had no control really.

A lot of very bad situations have been gotten out of by just hanging on, or dropping a foot and kicking / lifting the bike back up though.

One time I came off the back of a mates bike when some drunk slag pulled out of her local straight into us. I hit the deck and sort of bounced up and landed on my feet, and ran to a stop, while my mate was sort of under the bike pinned.
She tried to drive off, and I legged it right in front of her and forced her to stop (or run me down. Again.)

Basically though, the bike gets away from me, and then I start thinking about slowing down fast, and where not to hit, trying to steer dragging my hands. Having said that I haven't had any serious or very fast offs.

When you cash the bike or have some sort of accident do you hang on, like Jax does?
Or like me, have you bailed off the moment the bike went beyond that point of no-return ensuring your far away from that heavy metal?

I'm interested as in 10 years of riding, 'touch wood' I've managed to brake only my thumb. Even after numerous accidents, mainly in the early years on the 125 that is my worst injury. I'm not counting the bike falling of the car transporter and stuffing my knee.
some how dan that dont suprise me! lol

but for some reason i stay on! last time i lowsided , for some reason i held in the clutch!?????

and when i t boned a car my hands and feet were firmly where they should be...even when on my side spuashe dagainst the damn car!
