how do you apply the engine oil to the chain, cos i'm thinking about starting to use engine oil, but not sure of the best way to apply it?

cheers
I do this too, just use a paintbrush and an aerosol can lid, its free and gets in all the nooks and crannies

Lithium grease. Seriously, try it. Just apply it with a finger and make sure both the top and underside of the chain is well covered, rub it in to all the bits, then wipe off excess with a rag. Only needs doing once every 500 miles and I've found to be the best lube so far. Very little fling, too. Certainly very "alternative", but don't knock it till you've tried it.

Maybe not quite as good as a Scottoiler, but certainly better than spray lube (wet or dry).

I don't think theres been any intensive studies carried out on whether to apply chain lube before or after a ride but it makes more sense to do it when warm i.e just after a ride.

You seem to spend longer thinking about your scottoiler than it will take to fit it!

10 minutes to fit it.

After 18,000 miles on this bike and 11,000 on the last I still won't be parted.

Scott oiler makes a lot of sense to me.. I'll use up the can of castrol chainwax I just bought and then do the investment thing.. Prob still use the chain cleaner spray occasionally though.

And 10-15 minutes to fill the tube with oil.

Pop into your local B & Q and have look round the gardening section for a Product called Parasene, its used in greenhouse heaters etc, its basically parafin, but cheaper.

Put your bike up on a paddock stand if you have one and then pour some parasene onto a rag and give the chain a clean with the rag, or use a stiff paintbrush.

Just give it a good scrub with the rag soaked in parasene?

Then do I need to wait for it to dry or wash it off?

Or just apply the dri lube?

No paddock stand so it could be a bit of an issue.
