He was the man for the job alright. The thing is... it seems that if there hadn't been a war to fight, if it had been a "normal" period of history, he would have been fairly disastrous as PM.
To be the great man is ended up being, he needed to have an enormous war to fight.

(Slight diversion, but I honestly think Bush Jr sees himself as a bit of a Churchill himself. He probably should have followed Churchill's example and stayed on the drink.)

Churchill was a bit of an animal,and most of his political career was a string of disasters.
Sometimes you just need someone like that when you are in the **** though.He became great when greatness was thrust upon him for five years.Respect is due for that.

the invasion of the USSR was not a mistake and hitler could have easily won.

But he wanted the soviets to become slaves, no better than cattle...if he promised Ukranian independence and freedom from Stalin's terror then he would have sorted it.

The Dunkirk evacuation is easily the biggest loss Hitler suffered...he could have won there and then.
