I think this is all down to the Congestion charge and it being a victim of it's own success. I'm sure that they were not expecting so many people to find alternative modes of transport to avoid the charge. As a consequence they have not got the revenue that they were expecting from the charging so they are out of pocket. This is just a stealthy way to get that revenue back. They would have been hard pressed to start charging congestion charges to motorcycles that do not cause any congestion.

Westminster don't get any money from Congestion Charging (that goes to TfL) so that's unlikely to have been the issue here. Some of the London Councils (esp Kensington & Chelsea) have a tendancy to throw a spanner in the works whenever possible in order to oppose what TfL/Ken are doing, hence they didn't bother to add any bike parking to cater for the projected increases in people riding in. My guess is that riders have been complaining about the lack of spaces and Westminster have come up with this handy solution to increase bays which also brings in the $$$$

TBH i'm not at all suprised that the councils are after more revenue from bike parking, i mean they're clawing it out of us in every other way aren't they?! And although i'd obviously rather they didn't charge, it is difficult to justify why we shouldn't pay at least something when other drivers have to fork out loads...

Well, according to the article it means more bays with better security. It covers all of central London and if you get the season ticket it works out at slightly less than 50p per day.

The half hour or so I spend driving round Soho looking for a spot if I arrive after 9 is worth more to me than 50p, so I'm OK with it.

If they fulfill the promises of course...

oh i hear you...and will of course ensure that you are allocated a personal traffic warden to follow you around and monitor your every move. Cos i know how you like getting all those nice letters from TfL

I'm not opposed to the idea, but I'm curious as to how it would work. You park up at a bike bay and then what?? Get a ticket? To stick on the windscreen presumably, but what is to stop someone grabbing your ticket and sticking it on their bike/scooter?

or in the case of scum just taking the ticket and dropping it down a drain for giggles, Always buy a ticket and take it with me when I need to pay and display.
If I get a ticket I have the ticket I can send in with a polite letter saying sorry mate had a valid ticket he must of not seen it.

On that note, target obsessed wardens and an unsecured ticket between them and another tick towards their bonus.....yeah...don't think so..

One way around the tickets would be to punch in your reg number - either seasonal or single ticket - then noone else can have use for yours, unless they swap the plates over too.

Also I wonder: if they start charging for motorbikes, will they also in couple years time start charging bicycles when there is a sudden rush of people leaving their cycles attached to everything thats bolted down cos there is not enough railings to accomodate them?
