As your HR people or H&S rep if you can have a workstation assessment done - everyone's entitled to it and it'll reveal whether its a physical issue for you or bad provision on their part.

i'm a construction H & S advisor, ask for an assesment of your workstation to be made and report to your supervisor that its causing you discomfort and pain. you should be provided with a suitable seat provided it doesnt cause any other problems.

Well this is my first post on this site so hello everyone.

Have a look at the "Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act 1963" which states

Quote:
Sitting Facilities
Where people who are employed in an office, shop or railway premises have reasonable opportunities to sit down without it affecting their work, they must be provided with suitable and sufficient sitting facilities. Those facilities will not be classed as sufficient in a shop which is open to the members of the public unless the seat ratio is one to every three employees.

It is the responsibility of the employer to make sure that sitting facilities are provided and if he fails to do so he will be guilty of an offence.
Like the others have said, they will have had to have done a workplace assessment so have a look at that too.

ps: I also own an SV650S

Ask your boss for what reasons they won't give you a chair - professional reasons need to be explained further.

If no joy then ask for a workstation assessment as you believe that the constant is being detrimental to your health and you would rather investigate it now rather than be off on sick leave in weeks time (always goes down well with the bosses that). You have a right to an assessment and if you are suffering from your working position something must be done to allievate it.

The other good thing is to mention to your line manager everyday that your feet ache, your back aches, your ankles have swollen. Also ask your workmates and see how they are feeling some might suffer the same but won't speak up.

You should not be viewed as a trouble maker just explain that you are looking after your health so you don't go off sick. Whatever you say its alway to ensure that you remain at your work!!

You have to be twisted occasionaly and let the bosses think you really care about your work

Apart from what has been said above, you need to ask your workmates if they feel the same as you about it.If they do you have the basis for a general complaint from all of you about the working conditions, and it won't just be one "trouble maker" putting his head above the parapet. If your boss remains unreasonable after the issue is raised I suggest a low level campaign of reporting pain and discomfort by all of you via the firms H&S incident reporting system. There will be an accident or incident reporting form which you should all fill in every few days complaining about the symptoms you get after x hours standing at the checkout. These forms are a legal requirement and employers are likely to take note of them as they can represent evidence for future claims from workers.a small but growing file of similar forms will soon have the boss providing better conditions.
