Righto seeing as neither your memory stick or you camera work with your laptop, then I reckon your problem is with the laptop itself.

It could be Vista playing up or simply that your laptop is duff. Now if it was me and it was new I'd be taking my laptop back where I bought it and getting them to sort this out for you.

Alternatively, have a google around and see if there are some driver updates for your laptop so that all the devices work under vista properly.

Specifically you'd be looking for Mainboard or USB driver updates.

If you post up what sort of laptop you have I'll have a look for you if you like.

Doesnt look like theres alot of Vista support for that laptop.

This is the page on the compaq website with all the variations of model for your laptop

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...n&cc=uk&dlc=en

I was specfically looking for something to do with the mainboard under the Vista drivers but it doesnt look like theres much there thats going to help.

Without the laptop in front of me so I can actually do a bit more digging its going to be hard to resolve I think.

I run Vista Business Edition at home and both my camera (Canon Powershot A70) and my memory sticks work no probs. All i needed was the camera drivers from the Canon website.

My HP C3180 all-in-one printer/scanner worked just by plugging it in.

If your memory stick isn't working then I'd suggest that there's something wrok with your USB ports as they normally work straight off.

You're right and I agree, trouble is you can't buy new PC's or Laptops now without it being installed with Vista, Microsoft have stopped letting retailers sell machines with XP now.

The only retailer that has got out of it is Dell who have a few models of laptop that Vista doesnt run on due to driver issues.

Its IMHO a typical example of Microsoft rushing a product to market before its ready.

We've got it running on Liz's laptop at home and TBH apart from a few performance problems its been no trouble at all.

You can buy desktop machines with XP Pro from Dell no problem. I bought one a couple of weeks back, and another a month before that. They were Optiplex though, you may have bother with the other types, I don't know. It was more of a struggle when Vista first came out, but they soon seemed to realise that none of their business customers wanted it.

And just to reiterate what others have said, I'd stick with XP for now, Vista seems full of problems.

I'm sure you can buy a USB camera stick reader? I've got a usb SD card reader and it works fine with Vista. Have you checked 'My Computer' to see of the removeable drive comes up when you plug in your card?

Failing all of the above you could install XP and dual boot, it's what I do (although I think you may have to put XP on first).

If its any help at all I can tell you that my mum has a new Acer PC (T180) which came with Vista Home Premium installed, and she has a Fuji finepix400 digital camera. She can download photos by either plugging it into one of the USB ports (with supplied USB cable), or she can remove XD card from camera and bung it in Card-reader.

So I'd second fizzwheels diagnosis that it's the laptop.
