Biggles ..... actually I was intending second hand but I haven't had a new bike for 27 years and I got 0% finance! So in the end I went a bit mad and got it! If I'd gone second hand I would have been too tempted to get a blue SV1000 but I've read so much stuff about cranky cranks, well that put me off, plus its said that they eat chains and tyres if you use the performance.

I have tried to get info on this stuff before with no luck but new info is available but it doesn't sound good. One guy reckons its very old technology that can cause corrosion on some engine parts and the industry don't use it any longer!!! If it actually damages engines then how are they able to keep selling it?? Wouldn't they be closed down??
More info needed!

Buy a used SV,at least two years old with low mileage where someone else has paid for those major costs. Then service it yourself according to what you think needs doing and when.Vastly cheaper, and you won't keep eating yourself up about being ripped off.
And also treat every motorcycle as a consumable, and chuck it away at the end of 5 years. If you carry on using cheapo oil and filters this is a likely scenario.

If someone told me they serviced their bike themselves using Halfords cheapo oil and any cheap brand of filters because they thought quality oil was a rip-off, I'd walk away from buying their bike. To my mind they may as well throw it in a skip.

I say this as someone who has just been offered the job as a Senior Tutor in Motorcycle Mechanics at a local college and who consulted his ex-girlfriend - who holds a Phd in Mechanical Engineering specialising in automotive develpement - on this subject.

If you think cheap Halfords recycled oil is giving your engine the protection it needs, you are very much mistaken, but maybe you don't ride as hard as most so it's not needed.

Bugger! This just proves my point about industry lies...typical.....industry pay expert to rubbish the oppositions product to protect their own sales....which they deny ever doing!

The corrosion problems of 70 years ago have been addressed and are no longer a problem. I'm going to put some in the bikes...at £15 for 20,000 miles I reckon its got to be worth it. If I get only 1% more mpg thats £9.80 per year then its more than payed for itself. I had a Lada Samara many years ago and used ZX1 in that and it ran much quieter!
