I think this story shows more about how far we have allowed authoritarian culture to establish itself over the last decade or so.We have always had jobsworths, but now it seems the State officially backs them up.

Nah, don't think that stands up, we've had people being harassed for obscene tshirts for as long as there's been obscene tshirts, but they're pretty recent themselves after all. If 16th century nonconformists had worn "PURITAN AS F***" tabards I imagine they'd have been hassled by the watch.

Yes I should have said re-establish.No one doubts that things were pretty authoritarian in the 16th century, but the rise of democracy brought about a similar rise in liberal values over most of the 20th century.I believe that this trend has been firmly in reverse over the last two decades.

That was just an off the cuff example, you can find people being harassed by the police for no good reason in any period of history. I was just amused by "PURITAN AS ****". I nearly went with textile workers with home-spun shirts with "LUDDITE AS ****", or Emily Davison wearing a "SUFFRAGETTE AS ****" dress as she jumped under a horse

Still not 100% sure what the offensive part is supposed to be - is it the word beginning in "P" and ending in "S"? Or is it the inference that the wearer murders people on a daily basis and shows no respect for Teh Rule O' Law?

If it's the "P" word, I suspect all the wearer need do is point the "street warden" (one up from Milk Monitor?) to the nearest **** billboard - there's generally one in every town and if I was the kind of person to get upset by such things (I'm not really bothered it has to be said) I can imagine getting more distressed by the afore mentioned high street shop name than the "P" word.

EDIT: Chuckle, the afore mentioned shop name offends the swear filter, thus proving my point nicely For clarification, it's the clothing shop which begins in "FC" and ends "UK"

Used to have a T shirt with "The Runt" on the back, have been asked to cover it a couple of times. Asked what the problem was and they said the word was offensive. To which i ve always replied "thats what i'm called and I dont find it offensive so would you rather it started with C," have always backed off then.

Years ago I got into a spot of bother in a pub whilst wearing a Skid Row t shirt with Eat F**k Kill on the back. The lady in question objected to the Kill bit!!

in 1987 i had a WASP T-shirt that said "im an animal i F**k like a beast!!!" on the back,

i got smacked round the back of the head by a bloke in bridlington cos his kid repeated it as he walked past..............i was pretty pi55ed at the time, now thinking back if i was in the dads position id be lkely to take the same stance.

still, id wear it today if my mama hadnt accidentally put the iron through it..........................
