I remember riding the A41 down to Whitchurch early autumn '22 and being shocked at the completely flooded fields either side of the road, in places it felt like riding on a low bridge over a wide river. I think all the rain late last year has saturated the ground and contributed to the flooding we're seeing now.

Definitely. There's nowhere else for the water to go.

It's a bit like that in several areas of Oxfordshire too - quite a few lakes beside the road on my way in and outtoday. One particular village has a low point you have to take to pass, unless you're a selfish a-hole in a German SUV who will not wait to let people tiptoe down the middle of the road and charge right at you, well over the speed limit, with horn blaring creating a wake an aircraft carrier would be proud of... It's not very nice of me but I really wish people like that would crash and burn to death.

I like to think that Karma will deal with those selfish prats. Flooding has got a lot worse today. Lots of town center roads closed.

You'll be pleased to know that we have a few drier days coming up John, so the worst of the water should be with you by tomorrow and Friday, and after that it will recede hopefully.

I'm fortunate that I live on a hill on the outskirts of Shrewsbury so the floods don't directly affect me but my heart goes out to those affected. It must be so soul destroying to see your home or business flooded on a regular basis.

I've seen and felt the same (albeit in different parts of the country). The irony is that it's usually a good thing to have floodplain like that, which slows the volume flow down so it doesn't all pour quickly to lower lying areas, but we've all been conditioned to think it's a problem (and that we can use the land for development 'because it doesn't flood that often'!)

I agree. Despite my observation above, of course even a huge land mass 'sponge' has a capacity limit. Overflow is never good.

If it does rain, I wouldn't be able to see it because of the fog. Proper pea-souper here.

Was pleasant enough walking the dogs this morning and it is nice it is getting noticeably lighter at 7am. Rain now though and it looks set for the day....
