In days long gone.
When I brought my first new bike, only had learner plates , no training nothing. just a interest in biking I decided to go for a long ride, very little did I know there was a reserve tank switch. Checked my mileage and I’m sure I had another 10 miles for a gas stop, Anyway the bike died and there I am on country lane and some big guys on Harleys went by……….. I saw them (@5 of them) turn around and come back (I was shatting my self, I was only 17 at time) they came back looked at my bike, asked what’s wrong and one said have u turned the switch to reserve ………… I’ve got a reserve ? ![]() They switched it to reserve and it started……. ![]() Oh boy, was I grateful buy I also looked like a bill pillock……. Thanked them blah blah blah blah Anyway its good u asked at least u knew about a reserve switch…………… Always keep it on main tank……….when its runs out then switch to reserve and proceed to the nearest gas station….. Safe rideing… ![]()

Don't know what the fuel tap is like on a CBR600 , but the fuel tap on my zxr750 was a git to turn on the move and you don't get a lot of time when bike cuts onto reserve , worth practicing a few times on the move so you can do it quickly .
Cracking bikes CBR6's are , I was tempted by a steel framed CBR myself. Cheers Steve

I was told about the fuel tap when I first started biking, but that was back in the stone age.
![]() I was the other way round, sounding like some senile ol' git when I bought my SV by asking, so where's the fuel tap then? ![]() ![]() The trip switch method is a good'un. I use it in both the car (cos she's old and fuel guage isn't he most reliable thing in the world) and on the bikes... ... average 170 on the BlueBlade before thinking heading towards a petrol station... ... 250 on the Varadero! ![]() |

I learnt about the fuel switch after running about trying to bump-start an xl125 field bike. The me and my cousin thought "hmm, has it got fuel...yes...ah! fuel tap!"
Started on the next bump. I use the trip thing, when i get to around 120 miles on the trip i head for a petrol station (if im commuting) or just wait for the light to come on. Still keep an eye on the trip though, as when it gets over 120 miles fuel light coming on is imminent Matt |
