From a fellow newbie rider - I was in you shoes just a couple of months ago - I wouldn't worry about the gears, I still muck them up.
A friend told me to stop trying to count them, just ride in whatever feels right. No use I know when you're praying that you got it down to 1st before pulling out of the junction etc! Oh, and counter steering I had barely heard of when I took my test. I just rode it like my mountain bike. Congrats on the CBT. |

Congratulations on the CBT.
Whatever you do, don't worry about making mistakes. As I tell my learners, if you DON'T make any mistakes, how can you be expected to learn from them? As for countersteering, don't worry about it at all. If you can make the bike turn, you're already doing it. |

I do something different to the above. On the SV it's easy as there's a rev counter, and I'm not sure what bike you're riding for lessons, but...
When out on a ride, I ride by the revs, changing gear according to the noise that the bike makes. Basically, you want to aim for the middle of the rev range, as this gives you best balance of acceleration when needed, and engine braking (if any on the bike) - just by varying the throttle. ![]() If the rev's sound low, change down. If the rev's sound high, change up. This does mean though that occasionally I try to put it into 7th, and when riding hard & hit 1st at 50mph, I tend to think I'm in 2nd & attempt to change down again. After you've passed the test, this doesn't really matter though. Above all, do whatever makes you comfortable on the bike. ![]() Good luck with DAS. |
