That just the thing though hovis.......The Chi's are business guros......for them it didt cost £12bn to host it like here in the UK, infact they will come out of it better off and will probably have made a considerable amount of money.

Unlike here in the UK where it will cost the earth.....we will be paying it off for years......and it will still be utter rubbish.

Lets not forget the chinese built an entire airport 6 x the size of T5.....in half the time for 30% of the cost.......Well they have done the same with the olympics.

Yeah we're screwed. That was an amazing and beautiful ceremony. Obviously on the back of the military who staffed the event. But as a nation clearly an immense sense of purpose. Interesting to see the crowds response to the Pakinstani and Taiwan crew, very positive. The London do is going to be a major problem for us as a nation. I mean we can't even get behind it here in etherspace let alone on the ground. Where exactly are we going to find all those volunteers? Are we going to turn out the care homes? Can the Scout movement step up? Let's face it folks, we've moved on so much from having to prove ourselves on the track and field. Freedom of speech and the rights of the individual have been the Wests battleground. Maybe now's the time to think about how we have neglected our collective identity in favour of selfish aims!
Jesus, I've been converted....

I think this whole Olympic thing has become a colossal waste of money.International willy waving which has nothing to do with sport and everything to do with powerful people exploiting ordinary ones.Just like the Millenium Dome I struggle to think of more stupid ways to waste billions of our money.Just at a time when we can all afford it of course.

More ranting to follow.

Sorry can I just clarify here? Are you claiming 'Ranting Rights' in which case I challenge you as a previous claimant. You have no idea how effective I can be when it comes to moaning and general belly aching. Are you sure you want to claim this territory as yours? It's not worth it man, step away now. It really was a beautiful ceremony though. Really. But lets not lift the lid, or I'll have to challenge you to a griping duel ok?

Bloody impressive, I cant see how anyone let alone the UK can compete against such a thing.

Granted mainly because we dont force people to pratice for 2 years with a gun held against their heads.......but still......absolutely amazing stuff.

It was bloody impressive..and most people probably don't know that the Stage Management team making it all run smoothly are English (and are the same team that did the opening ceremonies for Athens and Sydney)
Still, all the performers won't put a foot out of place for fear of being beaten with a big stick!

The UK Olympics is the time for anyone with anything about them in the UK to go and make a killing. I know hundreds of project managers/welders/riggers/electricians/tiffies/construction workers rubbing their hands with glee.

Go and get your share, you're paying for it after all

Easier said than done....most of it is on framework agreemants, unless you are in the in crowd you dont stand much chance of getting work unless you are in the basic trades and have connections.

Fortunately my company has Sir Steven Redgrave as our olympic constuction bid ambasador lol

svgirl78 ... Your dead right of course they had english stage managers.. we are the best in the business

Sadly however it does look like the opening ceromony for England will be a dissapointment, mainly as we will have to follow such an impressive and grand array of talent and frankly breath taking specticals that we have just been witness too!!

It is widly rumoured in the business that the opening ceromony is already been planned for on the "cheep" which obviously isnt going to be as impressive as what we have just seen by any stretch of the imagination!

As for getting volounteers well the olympic council wrongly asumed that they would be inundated with people willing to put themselves forward for free on the basis of the prestige of such an event behind them and are coming up empty handed... after all we are talking about something that will take a good deal of time, practice and there will always be costs involved in that!

Dont forget the "volunteers" in Beijing didnt really have a choice in the matter... please dont think that I am trying to take anything away from them the national pride, whether you like the politics in the country or not, is imense and hats off to them.. with the eyes of the world watching them they pulled it out of the bag!

I on the other hand am carefully watching with anticipation to see what we can pull out of the bag for our olympic games and yes, gleefully rubbing my hands together knowing that I have changed career at just the right time to certainly cash in on the huge event that will employ the majority of london's technicians!
