i've got some images of some big ends that once lived in an audi engine, damaged after the oil pump broke. It wasn't very pretty (I did post them i think)

like I say, he maaaay get away with it, providing he

a) dosn't keep starting the bike up

b) if he really really has to use the bike he dosnt rag the poo out of it

c) and this is important - puts in some oil!!!

a bike magazine (forgot which one) had an article about running a bike with very low levels of oil in it, and although they didnt do a post-engine strip on the bike, they experianced no engine faliure (although, take the bike out and give it some load, it may have well gone pop). Modern engine oil is clever stuff, it amazes me

It may be amazing stuff, but it is not magic. If oil is low, top it up. how many threads have there been on here about seized engines due to not checking oil? From bottom line on sight glass to the top is almost a litre of oil, a very large percentage of the stated oil capacity.

Keep the oil towards the top line of the sight glass and you engine will thank you.

Or if it goes the other way, then the big end bearings will sieze to the crank until the shells spin, the crank will be scored, the bearing shells reduced to dust which will not do the rest of the motor much good either. One f##ked crank, zero chance of economical repair.

That's pretty much what happened to mine with low oil level

Yes, stood still, upright.
So no slosh under accelerating or braking.

Good article, impressive engineering.

However, you're still saying he may get away with it and I don't like that. It's near a dead cert that if it doesn't cause failure it will reduce the life of the engine. I could not advise someone to do that!

So, I'm bored of this and we're kinda off topic. Peoples; Check your f##kin oil!!

Turns out the place where my bike is parked is slightly on a slant. I paddled it down the road to somewhere which is properly flat and the oil level is just below the F line.

I think it must have been everytime I was checking when it was cold it was at the house on the slant and everytime it was hot it was in the carpark at work!

So...no engine failure to report!

I've got the same problem with my sight glass at the moment, a slighty milky coating on the inside, and a very small amount of white gunge inside the filler cap. My bike does mainly short journeys every day (less than 10 miles), and it's parked outside all the time, but I've not got any smoke from the exhaust though. I haven't changed the oil since last autumn, so maybe it's time to change it now

yes and the filter for good measure!!!
It maybe a gasket on it way as the milky colour can be coolant
