+1 to all that has gone before.
I had AA 5star for the one and only time I had it. Fortunately it was the only time I nedded it. REALYY good service as the bike had to be repatriated (they didn't have Kwak GT550s in France).
Ask your insurance company for an extension to mainland Europe so that you are covered. ALL other country's insurers include other countries except uk insurers. I can't remember whether you have to pay extra, but if you do it'll be only a small ammount.
The north of France doesn't hold much attraction for me, but get a bit further south and there are some great roads. The area around Brive-La-Gallard is stunning with fantastic roads and RIDER's REST (google it). Which is great. Went there in March, ran out of fuel just before we got there. No problem, they brought out a can of 95 octane from one of their own bikes!
Later on we went to St Gery to hook up with a guy from the pbmagforum.co.uk who runs 4 DR400s for enduro riding in the area (Loy Valley Enduro - google it - top peeps). Really good value and have a gite too.
