Why? Surely that is more to do with the attitide of the rider rather than how many cc's they have between their legs.

+1

I worked my way up to an R1 over 3 years from a 50 to a 125 to a 600 to a 650 to a 900 then to 1000, and I still ride like a muppet

I went from 100cc to 645cc and 33 bhp, then to 70 bhp. I could quite happily ride an R1 or a hayabusa. They only put out their max power when the rider gives the bike full throttle and lets the revs rise to the upper part of the rev range

He's just getting his license and he's most worried about depreciation, that's pretty boring, his testosterone level must be zero! Harleys do very well, you can pretty much buy and sell a nice looking sportster for the same price. As said, spend 2k on a modern bike and use it for 3 yrs and it will only lose a few hundred quid if you keep it in good condition.

But f**kinell are you trying to make him kill himself out of boredom and frustration as he is overtaken by cyclists and blokes from the sticks with straws in their mouths going "ooh arr boy, drag a praper combine with thar" a lot.

Buy something older that's done all it's depreciating or at least most of it. But it is a minor expense in comparison.

Easier to get the experience without hurting your self on a smaller more forgiving bike a 400 and even a 250 can still do speeds that are going to loose you your license. You can get used to maneuvering the bike etc a bit easier on the smaller and more importantly lighter bike. Only my experience of course which was 3 of us all passed our tests around the same time 2 of us got smaller bikes me on the bandit and the other lad on a CCM 404 with the other lad buying a 600. When all three of us go for a ride round the lakes we always with out fail end up waiting for the lad on the 600 and wen you ask him why its always something along the lines of "I gave it to much throttle trying to set off with you two and the back kicked out coming out of the junction" or i went round that corner and nearly dropped it and it took me a bit to get the bike back up right". I'm not saying he shouldnt get one just it might be a better idea in the long term if he got something with a bit less power than the 150bhp that an old R1 kicks out.
