I think we'll all agree there isn't likely to be an abundance of healthy livers awaiting transplant. So it's not like they said "we could give you this one, but because you drink heavily we're going to bin it". The doctors must have found someone who needed it just as badly.

With that in mind, let's consider the article that we may be reading now, or a few years from now, had the transplant gone to this 22 year old. Obviously it's quite likely that someone else may have been "condemned" to death- it could be anybody, a middle aged man, a teenage girl, a single mother- and I'm sure their family would be none too happy if they found out where that liver had actually gone.

Everyone deserves a second chance, but when there's only one second chance to give out, and one person is far more likely to make the most of it than another, then imo the difficult decision has almost been made for you.

So when someone says this was unfair, they're really just ignoring what may have happened had the decision been made the other way.

Would you rather no one made a decision meaning that all the patients died?

Grow up.
wo wo wo back the **** down.....

Firstly, my opinion is that... Mine I am not saying belive it or else.

As per KD's response given the facts I had in the report I read I voiced my opinion..

Telling someone thats dying.. you can have a new liver if you stay sober outside of hospital... Oh look you cant because you cant get out is imho playing god.

Of course they are trained people Im not making out they are not, I am very greatful to the NHS, but to refuse someone the chance is IMHO playing god.

None of us have all the facts... None of us which makes my opinion equally as valid as yours.

those who play god as you describe them are doctors. trained professionals who make judgment calls each and every day that people's lives depend upon.

i think they got it right, given the information i'm party to.

If someone is an alchoholic it is a mental health issue combined with physical attributes, therefore it is not "intentional" IMHO.

What I was trying to get at is there is a billion excuses not to give someone a liver as it could go to "waste" in a billion of those ways?

If someone genuinly wants to give it a go but isnt given the chance isnt that a little harsh?

absolutely, and couldnt agree more. but from how it was reported the late mr binge drinker,22, didnt want to give it a go, or didnt show that he wanted or could give up the booze for a period of 6 months.

now, for goodness sake, if i was told keith stop picking your nose or in 12 months you'll be dead, hell sure as eggs is eggs i'd be putting that little finger away. if ever a wake up call is needed to be told wake up or you'll die has to be the biggest imaginable? i know alcoholism is as much a mental problem as physical, but the doctors wouldnt have made this decision based on him not being able to demonstrate sobriety. they'd have looked into his attendances at AA, or whatever rehab course he'd been put on.

and as we are not party to this information with the bare facts I have, I strongly believe they condemed a man to a certain death that could possibly have been saved and gone to live a full life...

or get hit by a buss.?

+1000000000000000000000000000000

My best friend died when I was 11 and obviously that kind of thing sticks with you. His organs were offered for transplant and despite his life ending he saved a 6yr old girl who needed a heart and lungs his liver I think it was saved someone else.

Unless it it for religous reasons then please please be a donor.

Or possibly not. The risk of him not doing will have been greater for him than for other candidates.

They point here is that if they'd given the liver to him then someone else would have been "condemned to certain death". Would you have been having a go at them then, too?

Personally, I think it's an awful position for anyone person (or group of people in this case), no matter how experienced, to have to make. The decision was made by a panel of medics and will not have been lightly made; they have been careful to ensure that their decision was justifiable.

We should respect them for making a decision in the first place.
