I'd say 50/50 She still needs to check it's clear. Mr van driver was just letting her know that he was leaving a gap - not that it was clear. However, bikers seem to think that because they are allowed to filter, they don't have to pay attention. Maybe it has come from riding in London a lot but if I was filtering and saw a break in stationary traffic, I'd have slowed right down to ensure no-one was pulling out - not filtering at 30 assuming everyone can see me!

This situation happened countless times going up Camden Road from town and if I hadn't slowed up, I'd have been knocked off maybe 5 times! I actually saw a KTM rider get nailed on this exact road, in this exact situation because he just blindly filtered along side a line of stationary traffic at 30 mph.

I was led to believe the biker was at fault because he could'nt see past the van at a junction he should have stopped to confirm it was clear.

Personally, I don't often go flying past vans and other big vehicles you can't see over where there is a junction. If I do, then I sit the bike right next to the RHS kerb.

+1 The roads are dangerous enough when you CAN see what's ahead, let alone when your view is blocked by stationery traffic.

I think smooth riding is very bad in town. So many hazards like that it seems best way is to brake on path to bring you to a stop just before where someone might be waiting to pull out, then as soon as you have the angle to see it is clear you can give it beans again.

Probably worst sort of riding with regard fuel, consumable wear etc. But it is good balance between fast and safe in town.
