Hey Quiff (not going to call you by your special name as I may get told off)
![]() I know exactly where you are coming from. Some people don't moan because they actually have a problem with anything. It can be as simple as, one day you do something that annoys them a little and then after that, everything you do is cause for complaint. My old neighbour told me I wasn't allowed to park my land rover over the end of MY driveway (his house was next dorr but around the corner) as apparently the driveway was belonging to my property, but the tarmac at the end was in fact his. This was after many many issues which his wife and I never understood as we had previously got along so well. Then I got a boyfriend...who never did anything but be polite, but things changed. I took my landlords deeds to him after he reported me to the police (I saw him showing them the end of my drive....I never heard anything from them...lol) and I was incredibly polite and just said that according to the deeds, the driveway was part of my property and the tarmac at the end was council property and showed him a letter from them, stating that I had every right to park there. He still didn't like it. You see, some people just get a bee in their bonnet and unfortunately, when that person is retired or doesn't have much else to do in a day, they can become a real nuisance as they put so much effort into something that is in fact, extremely minor. No amount of pleasantries will work. Just continue your work Quiff, don't be too loud too late and I like the idea of taking a bottle of whiskey or something when the work is done. You could even thank him for being so understanding and that'll really annoy him...but he'll have to be polite...lol |

Well, I was gonna post that your not allowed to use your horn after 11pm, but if my neighbours were doing DIY after 10pm I'd be getting a bit irritable. Most people seem to think it should be earlier than that and guidelines that say 7pm are just ridiculous IMO, most people don't finish work until 5:30, and don't get home until after 6 to sit down to dinner. 7pm would mean you just couldn't do any DIY during the week.

today I have been mainly painting- quietly.. whilst he had his grand children round kicking a ballagainst the fence repeatedly for 3 hours and screaming hteir heads off !!
like I say we all used to be friendly.. ass ten mins over the fence , chat on the front if gardening.. used to tell him if planned on doin summat noisy but since he threw a wobbler and his mrs rang mandy at 8pm to say is your boyfriend takin the pi$$ .. not the best opening gambit .. well, since then we aint spoken.. now, the noises I am making I cannot predict when they will be- but always betwwen 9am and 8pm so I dont know what his problem is tbh Ithink he has issues and needs to go the doctor for stress or anxiety or something. speaking to a few other folk in the road they all said he has changed lately and they think he has gone a bot "odd".. repeating himself and stuff.. |

It's all a bit of give and take really, and at the moment, you'r doing all the taking.
Try to see it from his point of view. After say, 5, or 6 at the latest, the "working day" is over. If I get home, and every night for a fortnight, the flat adjacent was banging and hammering well into dinnertime and into the kids bed time and "corrie" time, when trying to get a bit of peace and quiet in my own home after a days graft, I'd be annoyed, especially night after night for a fortnight as you suggest in your post. If the person making all that noise didnt show any consideration, give me a warning, and just thought that "borox, I'm doing up my house and will bang and crash all for 12 hours a day, for days on end", I'd probably have put your windows through myself. You are being a bit selfish mate, especially if you never gave the old fella any indication for how long or how often you'd be doing it, or if there were any evenings that it's not convenient. Just because its your house, its his noise too, you share it. Forget its an old fella, we all need consideration. If I had a hot date, or babysitting or something needing concentration, whether its the Warrington branch of the wheeltappers and shunters club coming round for a game of charades, I;d expect you to respect my wish not to disturb the evening. I think people would expect noise from a house under renovation, and that during the working week, that "builders hours" ie til say 4pm is reasonable. (you wont see a builder at a domestic property working til 8 unless theres a very good reaon for it) or DIY'ers hours, of the weekend, but from mid am to early evening, (the relax and recooperation time) every night and then at the weekend as well, no ones getting a break from the noise. Can't you speak to the guy, and sort out a compromise? Just becasue you want a nice house, isnt a reason to make his life a misery. Thsts just selfish. A consideration is all he;s after. A decent bottle, and a thanks, even if you dont mean it, might make the difference between him calling plod when he sees some toerag having it away with the SV, and thinking "nah, the to$$er deserves it". |
