I can honestly say that a few years ago I did a similar thing, I had a few facial piercings and blue & green hair. I applied for and got a job in a busy school and one of the conditions was that the metal work and the hair colour went. It was a great job for a while and I did not miss the old me. I made the choice because I wanted a career and a good one. I am a qualified Teacher and I worked in the school and also for community education.

I dyed my hair black, took out most of my ear rings, removed my eye brow ring and took out my nose chain. Yes, as a Goth I looked cool. As a responsible adult, I looked terrifying to some kids and ridiculous to others.

However, after I was pushed out of my job my nose ring and the ear rings went back in and my hair was dyed again.

I thought I was growing up, but I think I was just conforming to someone else's norm.
