Yup the plastic one still has 20bhp or so advantage, but only right at the top. And with the SV you still have a pile of notes left over for sticky tyres and a trackday or 2.

Alright people, thank you all for the advice. I have made my decision....

I cant get rid of the SV, I like it too much and its perfect for my needs at the moment, and so I'm gonna improve it a bit. first job is treating it to a pair of nice new sticky tyres, then I'll most likely just change the springs for some better ones, I dont think its worth changing the forks as with my level of skill I wont be able to get the full out of them. I might get a new rear shock though. As for the engine, well why mess with something that's already brilliant?

For that extra improvement on the front end there are some cheap emulators available

Reasonable, maxton are about £80. But it depends entirely on rate.

Springs are a bit personal and depend on how heavy you are and how you ride.

Go to http://www.racetech.com/ click search=>spring rate search. Select your bike and then "Custom Fork and Shock Spring Calculation and Available Rates"

Fill in the details and it will suggest what you need.

Eg the one for the 03-07 SV650S is:
