Thanks for the advice. Don't mean to be inconsiderate and forgive me if I'm wrong (as I'm clueless with mechanics), but doesn't everything flow the other way? So the air comes into the air filter, then through the engine? I.e. there won’t be any shawings in the air filter?
- I am asuming in this instance that by filter, you meant air filter?

OK chaps. I gave it to the mechanic, and have had a really quick, rushed phone conversation....

LATEST:

The engine is sh4gged and needs a full rebuild. Top end damage. He doesn’t think that it will seize up on me, just blow up eventually. He reckons that it would run like this for a while before blowing up.

So, my only option now is to get a second hand engine. There are a few on eBay I have my eye on.

Chris, I'll book some time off work if you are still up for giving us a hand slotting a new one in?

If anyone see's/has a working engine up for sale, please let me know.

Cheers

Do the twin spark plug'ed engines (the newest ones) fit a K6?

While I'm sure the engine fits it may be a little tricky to get the electrics sorted, fwiw if its top end I've seen heads (and/or barrels[1]) go cheap on ebay and its not that much work to swap a head and only slightly more to swap pistons/barrels. Did the mechanic say which end or exactly what kind of top-end problem it was?

Druid

[1] FWIW if its barrel/piston I have a spare[2]
[2] For that matter I've got two spare engines but I'm keeping them soz.

It wasn't a very detailed conversation as I'm at work.

Any chance you can give me a list of questions to ask him then?

no worries
it's an easy way to tell what got fooked... you'll see shavings from whatever started grinding from lack of lubrication... generally, crank bearings have distinctive one side coppery one side whitish appearance, steal usually comes from crank or cam shafts, aluminum (shavings looks like steel but not magnetic) from the engine block/piston skirt ... not sure exactly with SV, not had her apart yet... don't even know which parts are ss/Al in there, but you get the idea...
