you can have different weights both sides and it will vary between tyers etc. take it to somone who knows what they are doing if your having problems with something at 90mph and you havnt got a clue youll kill yourself.

No because it might be too tight. Get the right socket and a torque wrench and check it

Stem nut won't make any difference if it's too tight, actual bearing adjusters would.

40nm (half turn off) and 80nm for the top one isn't it chris ? and 90nm for the stem nut on the pointy

In my original post I said make sure the stem nut is tight and not loose, it doesn't have an effect on the bearing directly, but the yoke pressing on the adjuster is. So if its loose, then the adjuster could work loose.

YC's right even if its over tight, its not going to have any effect on the bearings

Have you thought about fitting a GSX-R frame and engine to your forks? It may* sort out your issues

* or it may not, I'm not a mechanic, just a red wine fuelled fool back from a day at work and evening in the garage.

you can lift the front of the bike (no weight on the front) and turn the forks side to side see if they notch at all if they do they are buggerd, to check for play then pull the stanchion towards you then towards the bike "back an forth" to see if there's any clicks coming from the head bearings, you should be able to hear/feel them if not the bearings are most likley ok

or hold the front brake on and push the bike back and forth you will hear a click noise if there is play in the bearings or get some one to put there hands on top of the stem nut and see if they can feel a click while you rock the bike
If you want to check for notchiness in the head bearings then leave the front wheel on the ground with the weight of the bike on the front. Get a couple of bits of flat perspex and put one on top of the other with oil or grease between them and lay them under the front wheel so you can turn the bars much easier. The notchiness you get in a head bearing usually happens on the bottom bearing that takes the majority of the weight of the bike, and lifting the front end takes the pressure off that bearing so you can't feel the notchiness.

I lift the front when I'm checking for play in the bearings by pulling/pushing the forks, and also checking for side to side movement of the bars etc. That is much easier with no weight on the front end, but you generally won't feel notchiness until the wheel is on the deck. It was like this only 2 days ago when I took a customer's ZXR750 J1 for MOT, felt fine with the front in the air, rode like a sack o' crap cos the head bearings were notched.
