Did a run from Portsmouth to Manchester this week and I got 47.8 which I thought was rather crap. Bit early to say on a regular day to day basis. Only had it a week. I reckon it will be low 40's though. I thought it would be better than that looking at the Gov.t figures (yeah I know they're rubbish). May get better as it gets some miles on it.

Fook. That's some serious mileage. That's yearly motorbike miles for some.

I don't understand some of the mentality on this thread. Maybe it's a lease-hire vs owning thing.

A BMW 118D is easily 10 - 20k's worth of kit. If you have paid all that money to buy a car, why would you try to skimp on the maintenance of it?

I've got a 120D, and spend on average at least 3hours (120miles) a day driving. The car needed 2 services last year.

With BMW's fixed-price servicing I don't see the problem. Everything is there from the outset and you know how much a service will cost, and you take this into account when you buy the car.

I can't see why you would buy a new car and then go down to Halfords and try and throw some oil in it, instead of having it done by professionals where the work is guaranteed?

My new 120d Msport get delivered on Monday ... I'll be easily doing 4k a month in it unfortunately. I heard they are a bit uneconomical though despite the published figures?

At the moment I have a 1.6d Golf hire car that get 50+mpg even when driving at 90+ on cruise control, apparently in the baby bmw you will be lucky to get much over 40 doing this? And they are apparently even more uneconomical until you have put 10k+ on them

The big issue is the service indicator reset, it's bad news for a modern diesel if you just change the oil and filter and don't get it reset. The car won't do particulate filter regenerations as it thinks its oil is still full of diesel junk (which is why it told you to change the oil).

It's not thrashing that causes an early light usually, it's short journeys. Some Fiat 500 diesel owners are getting oil change messages at 3000 miles from just pottering about the town, totally blows away the perceived diesel cost advantage!

Independent is fine but if they don't have the software to reset the service indicator I think it's a very poor value choice.

I get about 45mpg on average, mostly motorway driving with some town work. Thats about 450 - 500miles per tank.

Ha... seriously? My commute is nearlly 400 miles. I'll be living between my car and the petrol station

It takes me half a tank in the golf and the 1 Series tank is a fair bit bigger.

Standard audi service is around £220, and they don't half inspect the car!

I told them it needed new wipers, they found one of the numperplate lights had gone, one of the led's on the brakelight, a few other minor bits and pieces which I hadn't even noticed, replaced all said bits and didn't charge for the half an hour of labour it took to fit them, only the parts themselves (came to about £2 for bulbs, fuses and brackets). They also washed the car (no horror stories like specialPhil reported) and gave it a full valet inside..

MPG seems to be around 47mpg combined (cruising on the motorway at 85mph and speed limits around town) which works out just shy of 500 miles on a 55 litre tank of diesel.

Like sudoxe said, the servicing cost might seem alot but if it's a one off charge for a years (+/-) worth of driving, the car is pretty much new, is still in warranty and on some kind of hire agreement - it's worth paying for the car to be maintained by guys who know precisely what they're doing and have an interest in the brand.

And in the event you come to sell/hand it over, the service book will look pretty will all those official main dealer stamps. (If you have full service history from main audi dealers, they give you free MOT's for the life of the car or until the pattern of service history is broken - little perks eh?)

If you still think it's unreasonable, consider £180 as 2 or 3 nights out, a new set of tyres for your bike, 3-4 tanks of fuel for the car, or £3.46 per week for a year. Surely you can find £3.46 each week?

I love the whinging about fuel economy...40, even 30mpg..i wished. The old barge does about 20 round town and im lucky to see 30, if im real careful, on a run. The old S40 is thirstier than an AA meeting in a pub. Might have something to do with the fact it weighs over 1700kgs!

60L tank = about 340 miles round town/mixed driving
